JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications and the Penn State Humanities Institute (HI) seek a faculty member to teach production courses for the Bellisario College and to co-instruct the core courses in the Humanities Institute’s Public Humanities Fellowship Program. This will be a non-tenure-line, multi-year position as Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor. The appointment will begin in August 2025.

The Bellisario College prepares students for careers in the media-related professions, including journalism, television and film production, and strategic communications. The successful candidate will teach two production courses each semester in the Bellisario College for the Department of Film Production and Media Studies and/or the Department of Telecommunications and Media Industries. The candidate will have a background in multimedia production and storytelling across platforms, and experience with hands-on mentoring and community-based learning projects.

The successful candidate will also teach each semester in the Public Humanities Fellowship Program. The program trains undergraduates in the theory and practice of public humanities. It also aims to equip students with skills to facilitate community engaged public humanities projects and the means to produce digital materials (such as short film/documentary, podcasts, and online exhibitions) that explore and expand on issues of social importance.

Two courses are required for the Fellowship. Introduction to Public Humanities, taught in the fall, focuses on providing an overview of public humanities and training in multi-media production, resulting in a short media production by the students done in partnership with a university or community group. The faculty member would be responsible for providing students with the production skills to participate in the digital and mass media project. In the Spring, Capstone Experience in Public Humanities enables the students to develop their own ideas for projects and carry them through under the tutelage of the co-instructors. The faculty member would be responsible for guiding these projects and mentoring the students as they carry out these projects.

The Bellisario College welcomes applications from candidates with teaching and/or professional experience and a Master’s degree; an MFA or appropriate terminal degree preferred. Special attention will be given to those applicants whose work has focused on public engagement or social justice.

Further, it is expected that the faculty member will be in residence for the full academic year and will take part in the intellectual and public life of the Bellisario College and campus and attending symposia and events at the HI and working with faculty, students and on and off campus groups.
