JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Overview
Student Disability Resources (SDR) seeks to hire a Remediation Specialist to help prepare accessible course materials for students affiliated with our office. This is a part-time and fully remote position. Although the hours for this position are flexible, we ask that staff be as consistent as possible.
Responsibilities
Content preparation
Procure course content from Canvas, the Penn State Library, databases, publishers, and other locations
Convert files between a variety of formats (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, PDF, Text, HTML, etc.)
Split and reorganize content based on individual student need
Deliver content to students upon completion and approval by management
Content remediation for visually impaired students
Audit content for accessibility
Remediate (i.e., format) content based on student need. Remediation tasks include, but are not limited to:
Adding and adjusting headings
Adding page numbers
Writing descriptions for image, charts, graphs, videos, and other visual media
Inserting and editing footnotes
Inserting, formatting, and editing tables
Creating and editing equations in accessible formats
Providing “tactile graphics” (i.e., raised line drawings) for images as required
Project Management
Actively track tasks using the team's project management process/tool
Prioritize available assignments by due date
QualificationsRequired
Consistent access to a strong and reliable internet connection
Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
The ability to attend prescheduled meetings
Excellent writing and communication skills
Willingness to learn
Great attention to detail
Highly Preferred
Previous experience remediating or formatting digital materials for users who are blind or visually impaired
Knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite
Knowledge of HTML and LaTex
Previous experience with Assistive Technology
Knowledge of digital accessibility standards, such as the Web Accessibility Content Guidelines (WCAG)
