JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Animal Diagnostic Laboratory (ADL) at Penn State (https://psu.edu) is hiring a Research Technologist as part of our team that provides critical animal health, food safety and public health diagnostic testing. This individual will be responsible for a range of diagnostic testing, primarily in virology, cell culture and serology. Cross-training in one or more other disciplines will be expected, in order to provide assistance and ensure adequate coverage in other sections of the ADL as needs arise. The successful candidate will also be responsible for ensuring that equipment is performing as required, maintaining an inventory of supplies, preserving cell lines necessary for diagnostic testing, and general lab upkeep. Test results will be entered into the appropriate laboratory information and/or quality management system. The individual will also assist the section head with diagnostic test development and deployment, as well as troubleshooting of non-performing tests. Following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and adhering to all aspects of the ADL’s quality system will be expected to ensure consistent and accurate results, as well as following all safety procedures. The individual in this position, under general supervision, performs tests that require attention to detail, time management abilities, ability to stay organized, maintain focus, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines. Occasional after-hours/holiday testing may be required to help meet emergency diagnostic needs.

Acquisition of the knowledge and skills required to perform the assigned duties of this position is expected, as is participating in relevant proficiency testing exercises. Occasional travel may be required for training and continuing education purposes. Associated expenses will be covered by the ADL. This is a fixed-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire, with excellent possibility of continued funding.

Education and Experience:

This position will be filled at the level of Intermediate Professional or Advanced Professional, depending on the final applicant's experience and education. The Intermediate Professional level requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree plus one or more years of relevant experience with three or more years of experience being preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional education and/or experience are required for higher-level positions.

Preferred experience and skills include, but are not limited to:

  • Experience in a diagnostic laboratory, veterinary clinic, or other biology or animal science-related position.

  • Knowledge of basic scientific veterinary medical terminology, animal science, laboratory safety, and quality control/assurance.

  • Familiarity with microbiological techniques, including aseptic techniques, adherence to standard operating procedures, and detailed recordkeeping.

  • Proficiency in taking precise measurements, executing controlled movements for sample preparation, and possessing fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Rabies vaccination and biennial titer checks, at the expense of the employer, are strongly recommended for this position.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$38,300.00 - $61,000.00
