JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Pennsylvania State University Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) (https://ehs.psu.edu/) is seeking an individual with a thorough understanding of fire and life safety practices along with knowledge of occupational safety and health principles and regulations. The Workplace Safety Specialist position is located at the University Park campus and provides workplace safety and health support at all University locations (including all Commonwealth campuses and research locations), except the Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manages the University’s Building Emergency Evacuation Plan (BEEP) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) programs. Provides implementation guidance and conducts routine audits to ensure program effectiveness.

  • Provides program implementation support to EHS Workplace Safety and Health group including fire safety, occupational safety, and industrial hygiene efforts.

  • Interprets and applies workplace safety and health regulations, codes, and standards of practice to activities throughout the University.

  • Conducts risk assessments of buildings, operations, and events to identify potential hazards including coverage of home football games. Assesses adherence to applicable regulatory standards and University operating procedures.

  • Initiates and develops procedures, programs, and design standards to address fire safety issues.

  • Develops and conducts training programs to meet regulatory expectations and build awareness of University safety and health issues. Identifies outreach opportunities and engages with the University community to enhance the understanding of safety and health concepts within both employee and student populations.

  • Routinely assesses program metrics to identify new performance goals and training opportunities.

  • Manages data associated with assigned programs and ensures that records are maintained in accordance with regulatory and University requirements.

  • Serves as team lead in responding to fire, smoke, and alarm conditions and coordinates with EHS staff, campus units, police, fire, and contractors.

  • Participates on EHS team and provides support to further departmental mission and provides services to other EHS programs as needed.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Minimally requires a bachelor’s degree or higher in Occupational Safety and Health, Fire Science, or a related discipline plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Position requires a thorough understanding of fire and life safety practices along with knowledge of occupational safety and health principles and regulations.

  • Demonstrated experience communicating technical information to a wide range of audiences is necessary.

  • This position is required to respond to campus emergencies as directed.

Clearances:

  • This position requires operating a motor vehicle as part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required, in addition to standard background checks and clearances. Additionally, you must be able to achieve medical clearance and be able to wear respiratory protection.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$56,200.00 - $81,500.00
