The Department of Geography and Geographic Information Science invites applications for a full-time tenure track, Assistant or Associate Professor in Geographic Information Science and Systems (GIS) with specialization in geospatial data science. We seek an individual with expertise in geospatial computing and data science, including artificial intelligence, spatial modeling, big data analytics, geovisualization, and/or spatial statistics. We are particularly interested in applicants who use high-performance and/or data-intensive computing to solve complex geospatial problems. Candidates\' research programs should align with one or more current departmental and school research strengths, including cyberGIS, geospatial data science, remote sensing, health and medical geography, urban and economic development, river and watershed dynamics, transportation geography, and natural hazards/climate change.

The successful candidate is expected to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, establish and maintain an active and independent research program, and provide service to the Department, the University, and the profession. Teaching responsibilities include introductory and advanced undergraduate courses on GIS and geospatial data science, potentially including Environmental Data Science, Spatial Analysis, Geospatial Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, and High-Performance Geospatial Computing. Most courses will be in person, but some courses will be online to support our Master\'s program in CyberGIS & Geospatial Data Science.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed all requirements of a Ph.D. in geography, GIS, or a related field by mid-June 2025 for a preferred start date of August 16, 2025. Evidence of an active research agenda, teaching effectiveness, and effective interpersonal and communication skills are required. Candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to working with women and underrepresented minority students or faculty through teaching, mentoring, or service are especially encouraged to apply.

Salary and Benefits

The budgeted salary range for the position is \$80,000 to \$95,000 at the Assistant Professor level and \$98,000 to \$125,000 at the Associate Professor level for a 9-month service basis. Information on benefits may be found at: https://www.hr.uillinois.edu/benefits/ .
