Job Summary

Under the administrative direction of the Sr. Field Safety Advisor, Safety and Compliance, assist with the delivery of campus occupational safety and health and environmental compliance services.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform monthly fire extinguisher inspections and assist with annual fire extinguisher inspections. Perform fire extinguisher maintenance, install new fire extinguishers, and replace faulty or discharged fire extinguishers. Properly document and report.
  • Inspect and properly document and report the status of campus stormwater green infrastructure, and construction site erosion control infrastructure, devices, and practices.
  • Assist with chemical storage verifications, air emissions opacity observations, investigations for reported releases of petroleum/chemical substances, and investigations of unauthorized disposal, and properly document and report.
  • Assist with industrial hygiene monitoring, respirator fit testing, facility/equipment inspections, and incident investigations. Perform routine maintenance on industrial hygiene and other technical safety equipment. Properly document and report.
  • Perform other duties as assigned including supporting the Mission, Vision, Values and Guiding Principles of Facilities & Services, and pursuing professional development activities.

Additional Physical Demands

Environmental Demands:

1. May work in high heat/steam, UV light or extreme weather conditions.

2. May be exposed to potential danger from moving parts and equipment.

3. May be exposed to heavy dust, loud noise, chemical fumes, welding torches, and other general conditions found within the construction trades, pollen, allergens, and animal dander.

4. May work around radiation, biohazards, and chemicals with proper training.

5. Must be capable of wearing all required personal protective equipment including respiratory protection, eye/face protection, hearing protection, protective footwear, and protective clothing.

6. May have to climb ladders, work from elevated surfaces, access tunnels, work around/in confined spaces, and other hazards.

Physical Demands:

1. Mostly field work which includes extensive walking and climbing.

2. Position involves frequently lifting tools, toolboxes, testing/monitoring equipment, equipment cases/containers, life safety devices, and packages for shipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Any one or any combination totaling eighteen (18) months from the following categories:
    • college course work in environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, or a closely related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
      • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
      • Associate\'s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
      • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
      • Bachelor\'s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
    • work experience that required environmental health and safety knowledge and skills.
  • Possession of a valid State of Illinois Class D driver\'s license at time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ire extinguisher inspection and maintenance.
  • Experience building relationships with professional contacts.
  • Ability to take and pass the ICC Portable Fire Extinguisher Technician exam within 3 months of employment.

  • Ability to follow-up on projects and use initiative and sound judgement.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3988 - Environmental Health & Safety Technician I position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date.
