Duties Description The Office of Mental Health (OMH) is recruiting to fill multiple Maintenance Assistant positions. These are temporary/hourly positions in the Bureau of Environmental Design and Improvement located in the Central New York area. Specific duties to be performed may include, but are not limited to the following: Perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks in one or more of the trades including, carpentry, painting, minor electrical, masonry/tilework, and flooring. Work under the direction of a field supervisor and follow written and verbal instructions. Possess working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in trades to which assigned. Perform moderate to heavy manual labor. May climb ladders and work at heights on scaffolds and platforms, and in confined spaces. Demonstrate the ability to adhere to OSHA safety standards. Travel within assigned region to multiple OMH facilities.
Minimum Qualifications Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the NYS CSEA Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services. Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license is preferred, but not required, for these positions.Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
Additional Comments These positions are part of our Central New York Revite team, which travels to various facilities in the Central New York area performing special project renovations, ongoing maintenance, small repair, and environmental improvement projects. This region includes Albany, Marcy, Utica, Syracuse, and Ogdensburg. The regional revitalization team concept was first adopted for the New York City region in 1984-85, and soon expanded to five regions that cover the entire state. The Environmental Revitalization Teams are made up of temporary Trades Generalist, Maintenance Assistant, and Facility Operations Assistant 1 positions that perform ongoing maintenance and small renovation projects to augment facility support staff services. The teams operate on an ongoing basis, making visits at each OMH facility in the region twice each year. Candidates are not eligible for reimbursement of travel costs.
