Description

THE AGENCY

The General Services Agency (GSA) is comprised of Fleet Services, Facilities, Procurement, Special Services, Parks, Security, and Business Support and is responsible for a broad spectrum of services to all the County departments and agencies. It requires a very diverse workforce to accomplish the GSA mission of contributing to the quality of life in Ventura County by partnering with their customers to provide expertise and cost-effective service delivery, and foster the preservation of natural resources.

THE POSITION

Under immediate supervision (Custodian I) or general supervision (Custodian II), provides a variety of custodial services within assigned areas of public buildings.

The ideal Custodian I candidate will be reliable, have some prior custodial experience, exhibit a good attitude, and have the capability to learn more advanced custodial tasks. Additionally, the ideal Custodian II candidate will have prior experience in providing custodial services in a large campus-type facility and be able to work independently, accomplishing assigned tasks efficiently with limited supervision.

Custodians work the night shift, 12:00 am to 8:30 am

PAYROLL TITLES AND APPROXIMATE SALARIES:

Custodian I: $17.84

Custodian II: $17.75 - $24.75 per hour

WHAT WE OFFER:

  • New Hire Incentive- Subject to the applicable section of the SEIU 721 MOA 2022-2025 (Secs. 3801): New hires may be eligible for a one-time New Hire Incentive of up to 10% of the newly hired employee’s current annual base wage

  • Educational Incentive: 2.5% for an Associate's degree, 3.5% for a Bachelor's degree, or 5% for a Master's degree

  • Night Shift Differential – five percent (5%) of the base pay

  • Flexible Credit Allowance: Biweekly contribution towards medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from authorized plans

  • Deferred Compensation: County match of up to 3%, dependent upon your contribution amount

  • Pension Plan: Participation in the County's defined benefit plan

VETERAN'S POINTS

Custodian I is a trainee/entry level classification, and Veteran's Points may apply to eligible applicants. Documentation of military service (DD-214) must be submitted prior to close of recruitment in order to receive points.

NOTE: Custodian I/II is represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

Custodian I:

  • Keeps assigned area clean, sanitize and aseptic by scouring, scrubbing, mopping, polishing, using germicides and wet dusting, collects and disposes trash.

  • Cleans, deodorizes, and disinfects lavatory floors, walls and fixtures.

  • Dusts, cleans and polishes desks, equipment, cabinets, shelves and other furniture.

  • Vacuums carpets and rugs.

  • Replenishes lavatory supplies.

  • Keeps workstation and equipment neat and clean.

  • Sweeps, mops, strips, seals, waxes and buffs floors.

  • Washes and cleans windows, blinds and glass doors.

  • Sweeps building entrance and sidewalks and other related duties.

  • Shampoos carpets and rugs.

  • May utilize software systems to maintain work records.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Custodian II:

  • Collects, stages material for recycling and disposes of trash.

  • Sweeps, mops, strips, seals, waxes, and buffs floors; vacuums and shampoos carpeting and upholstered furniture.

  • Washes and cleans windows, blinds, windowsills, screens, and glass doors.

  • Dusts, polishes, and cleans desks, tables, shelves, cabinets, woodwork and other furniture; dusts and washes lighting fixtures.

  • Scrubs, disinfects, and cleans lavatory fixtures, floors, walls, showers and tubs using germicides and green seal products; replenishes lavatory supplies and cleaning materials.

  • May operates special cleaning equipment and participate in major cleaning projects.

  • Cleans and polishes drinking fountains, basins, counter tops and other stainless steel fixtures.

  • May utilize software systems to maintain work records.

  • Keeps work station and equipment neat and clean.

  • Performs other related duties.

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE

Custodian I: No experience or training is required; however, applicants must demonstrate possession of the required knowledge and abilities.

Custodian II: To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. The required knowledge, skills, and abilities can also be obtained by six (6) months custodial experience. Completion of an approved custodial training course may be substituted for the experience requirement.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid California driver license is required.

Applicants must be willing and able to bend, reach, twist, push, pull, lift and carry items associated with the job duties described above.

Applicants must be willing and able to participate in a detailed background investigation by the District Attorney's Office in order to obtain clearance to work in their facilities.

Applicants will need to complete and submit a Sheriff's Office Security Clearance Request form post-offer as a requirement for assigned Sheriff facility access.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Custodian I: Working knowledge of: cleaning procedures and the proper use of custodial equipment. Ability to learn more advanced custodial techniques; complete time records and work reports.

Custodian II: To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Thorough knowledge of cleaning techniques, commercial procedures, cleansing agents, and the proper use of custodial equipment. Some knowledge of computers, e-mail. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and complete time records and work reports using a computer-based payroll system;

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE - qualifying

All applicants are required to complete and submit the questionnaire for this exam AT THE TIME OF FILING. The supplemental questionnaire may be used throughout the exam process to assist in determining each applicant's qualifications and acceptability for the position.

APPLICATION EVALUATION - qualifying

All applications will be reviewed to determine whether or not the stated requirements are met. Those individuals meeting the stated requirements will be invited to continue to the next step in the screening and selection process.

WRITTEN EXAMINATION-100%

An un-proctored, internet-based job-related written exam will be conducted to evaluate participating candidates' knowledge of general cleaning procedures and basics of restroom cleaning in public buildings. Applicants must earn a score of seventy (70%) percent or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

VALIDATING PROCTORED WRITTEN EXAM

Offers of employment may be conditional to the candidate until taking and passing an on-site, proctored exam similar to the un-proctored, internet-based exam.

Applicants successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of six (6) months. The eligible list established from the recruitment may be used to fill present and future regular, temporary, fixed-term, intermittent and extra help vacancies. There is currently 1 regular full-time vacant position.

NOTE: If appointed at the lower level, incumbent may be promoted to the higher level without further exam upon meeting the minimum requirements, demonstrating satisfactory performance, and in accordance with the business needs of the department.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION

Applicants may be subjected to a thorough background investigation which may include inquiry into past employment, education, criminal background information, and driving record. Applicants for the position of Custodian II will need to participate in a detailed background investigation by the District Attorney's Office in order to obtain clearance to work in their facilities and by the Sheriff, if assigned to work in Sheriff facilities.
