Description and Functions
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Open and sort sales, use, mineral, and cigarette tax returns. Endorse checks and tax return documents were received to deposit sales, use, lodging, mineral, and cigarette monies with the State Treasurer's Office. Scan endorsed checks and tax documents into the ETS System for processing and posting. Audit and verify character recognition to match the image of the return in the Excise Tax System. Analyze and reject documents to the Excise Tax Division for further verification. Analyzes and processes all mineral tax returns and routes for further processing or posting to the Mineral Tax Division. Initiates and balances the monthly Mineral distribution. Processes bar-code cleanup recognition for proper posting of documents. Serves as backup for processing and distributing all outgoing and incoming mail for the department when needed.

Audits, Studies, and Verifies character recognition of scanned sales/use/mineral tax returns to ensure accuracy. Corrects inaccuracies and forwards for additional processing.
Opens, Sorts sales/use/mineral tax returns by type and distribution to the department. Verifies returns. Endorses checks and corresponding documentation/returns to deposit monies with the State Treasurer's Office. Calculates checks to balance monies received.
Scans sales/use/mineral tax returns and applications into ETS & MTS systems to process and post to proper accounts. Ensures proper positioning and legibility. Makes decisions as to legibility.
Works problem documents through the bar-code recognition program. Uses considerable judgment and analytical skills when determining how to resolve problems. Works closely with technical personnel to fix and resolve problems.
Coordinates with other division personnel to meet deadlines, closing, and general accounting requirements of the division/section. Processes and balances the monthly Mineral distribution and creates reports for publishing.
Attends staff meetings to receive information, discuss and resolve situations with superiors, and coordinate activities with other sections within the unit. Keep abreast of new work techniques, and implement changes as required.
Performs other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of basic accounting and business principles.
Knowledge of data entry in the WOLFS III system.
Knowledge of computer program applications, data management, and record-keeping.
Knowledge of State and Federal codes, regulations, and related statutes.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Associate's Degree (typically in Finance)
Experience:
No prior experience required
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
1-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Finance)
