Job Description

The Assistant Director, Student Wellness & Counseling Center, under the direction of the Director, provides approximately 30 hours per week of direct, face to face; on-campus counseling, crisis intervention counseling and short-term individual, couples, and group counseling for improving personal, academic, and wellness related to academic success.

May provide adjunct supervision to Student Wellness & Counseling Center administrative staff and graduate fellows. Provides mental health and wellness development training to students, faculty, and staff. Consults with staff and faculty on services for students. Maintains referral network. Maintains personal, academic, and wellness self-help resources.

Essential Duties:

  • Counseling (80%): Provides comprehensive counseling and crisis intervention services.

  • Supervision (10%): Supervises and trains assigned staff.

  • Representative (5%): Represents department at university and other functions as appropriate.

  • Administrative (4%): Assists Director with organizational and administrative tasks as requested.

  • Other (1%): Other duties may be assigned

Responsibilities:

  • Provides mental health counseling as well as crisis intervention to individuals, couples, and groups.

  • Meets ethical obligations for timely documentation of counseling services per State of Texas licensure requirements and Counseling & Psychological Services policies.

  • Engages in counseling related activities including administering and interpreting psychological tests/inventories, making referrals, and managing various organizational and administrative aspects of counseling cases. Provides consultation to faculty, staff, students, and parents.

  • Seeks consultation from peers and leadership for difficult clinical cases per State of Texas licensure requirements.

  • Per state licensure requirements, participates in continuing education and professional development activities related to the performance of job functions and maintenance of skills in one’s professional specialty area.

  • Serves on departmental committees and meetings, division and university committees, and other university functions.

  • Provides outreach presentations for students, faculty, and staff members about counseling services, programs, professional development topics, issues, etc.

  • Provides professional presentations at local, regional, and national conferences and workshops.

  • May provide adjunct supervision for master’s and doctoral degree graduate students in counseling, counseling psychology, and graduate assistants.

  • Publishes and/or disseminates the results of research and evaluation efforts.

  • Assists with organizational and administrative tasks, as requested.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance, Social Work, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or other specialty related to job function.

  • LPC’s must have completed at least 3000 clock hours of post-licensure clinical mental health experience in no less than 18 months of supervision. LMFT’s must have completed 3000 clock hours of full-time post-licensure clinical experience in no less than 24 months with 200 hours of supervision. LCSW’s must have completed at least one year of supervised clinical experience with 100 hours of supervision and have passed their state board exam.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Clinical competency in multicultural counseling.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Adherence to the Ethical Principles and Code of Conduct for the relevant Texas State Licensing Board and all relevant laws of the state of Texas.

  • Licensing / Professional Certification: Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Must maintain licensure for continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Doctorate or Doctoral candidate in Counseling, Clinical psychology or a related field.

  • Three years or more counseling experience in a college/university counseling center setting,

  • Knowledge of professional counseling theories, learning theory, and familiar with diagnostic assessments.

  • Knowledge of advanced counseling techniques to include the ability to certify and train faculty, staff, students and community members.

  • Ability to relate empathically, effectively, and consistently with a vast student population including sensitivity to cultural differences. Solid understanding of counseling, consulting, psychological and diagnostic assessments, and training skills.

  • Ability to supervise and train professional and support staff. Ability to interact and effectively communicate with students, faculty, staff, and community. Ability to develop, organize, facilitate, and evaluate programs. Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Licensing/ Professional Certification: Licensed at the independent level for LPC, LMFT, LCSW or equivalent license within Texas for 1 year or more. Additionally certified in Health Education, Health Promotions or related field.

    Salary: $70,000

    Hours: Monday - Friday; 8am to 5pm; some nights and weekends as needed.

    Supervision of Others: This position generally supervises employees.

    Work Location: This is not a remote position. The selected candidate will be required to work on campus.
