Job Description Summary:

This position is located in College Station, TX and is not eligible for remote work arrangement.

The Assistant General Counsel IV, under general supervision, provides legal representation, counsel and support for System clients on a broad range of legal matters in areas of actual and potential legal liability. Participates in Office of General Counsel matters, including more narrowly focused and in-depth practice area assignments, responsibilities and special initiatives. This position will focus on Student Affairs matters and Compliance issues (Title VI, Title IX, ADA/504, Clery Act, FERPA).

Responsibilities:

  • Provides legal representation, counsel and support for System clients in internal and external administrative and judicial proceedings; and serves as second chair to the assigned Assistant Attorney General in litigation.- Interprets federal and state laws and regulations; and internal policies, regulations, and rules.- Reviews and drafts documents including internal policies and procedures, legal memoranda and opinions; and external legislation, briefs, statements of position, requests for Attorney General opinions and open record decisions.- Provides consistent quality legal services to System clients in a timely manner.- Participates in Office of General Counsel matters, including special initiatives, training presentations, workshops, and well-researched briefing papers and legal memoranda.- Provides consistent high quality legal services to System clients related to more narrowly focused and in-depth practice area assignments, responsibilities and special initiatives.- Serves in a general legal liaison role between the Office of General Counsel and assigned System institution and agency client(s).

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:- B.A./B.S. plus an earned LLB or JD degree from an accredited law school.- Seven years of related legal experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.

  • Knowledge of subject matter in assigned practice area(s). - Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to manage a broad range of complex legal issues for multiple clients throughout the state.

  • Travel required.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:- Member of the State Bar of Texas in good standing or will obtain a Texas law license through reciprocity within 6 months of hire date.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Higher Education environment or in District or County Attorney Office. - Significant first-chair trial experience (criminal or civil) and/or significant appellate experience.
