Job Description

The Assistant Program Leader in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources supports the extension team by focusing on planning, program development, evaluation, and assessment. This role plays a crucial part in conducting community needs assessments to tailor extension programs effectively. In collaboration with the Program Leader, this position helps shape strategic initiatives and enhance the impact of extension services on community development. This position reports to the Community and Economic Development Program Leader for Cooperative Extension Programs.

This position is funded by a grant or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of grant or restricted funding.

This position may pay more than the salary listed above depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and refines extension programs and production of materials based on systematic community needs assessments. Designs and implements evaluation frameworks to assess the effectiveness of extension programs. Assists in the development of strategic plans and goals, ensuring alignment with community needs and organizational objectives. Plans, organizes, and manages day-to-day activities, developing and implementing procedures for the administration of the unit and programs.

  • Oversees the collection and analysis of program data to inform continuous improvement. Prepares detailed reports and presentations on program outcomes for stakeholders and funding bodies. Ensures compliance with all grant requirements, including the effective management of resources. Conducts and facilitates comprehensive community needs assessments to identify priority areas for extension activities. Utilizes assessment data to recommend program adjustments and resource allocations. Aggregates required data of in-depth and outreach programs to report to the Annual Plan of Work and Accomplishments Report.

  • Assists with mentoring staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptation to changing community needs. Develops and recommends training programs for Extension Agents and Extension Program Specialists based on outcomes of community needs assessments. Develops and conducts onboarding and training for new employees.

  • Assists in the preparation and monitoring of budgets for programs and events. Approves program plans in the Program Evaluation and Reporting System (PEARS) and assists with grant management. Serves as a delegate for the Program Leader in their absence, ensuring continuity of leadership. Researches, develops, and writes white papers, grant applications, and prepares presentations. Maintains and develops communications between partners by attending meetings, district/regional training, and conference calls.

  • Participates in college-wide activities and committees and performs other duties as deemed necessary.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Three years of related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet applications and program/project management tools.

  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with various stakeholders.

  • Maintains attention to detail and utilizes sound judgment.

  • Ability to cooperate with others and build collaborations or partnerships across organizations and institutions.

  • Ability to multi-task in the coordination of multiple educational programs/grant projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in applicable field.

  • Seven years of related experience within the Cooperative Extension Systems.

  • Seven years of experience with various socioeconomic populations.

  • Knowledge of the 1890 land grant system.

  • Demonstrated grant writing skills and knowledge of 1890 land-grant system.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead others in strategic and program planning.
