Reporting to the Manager, Satellite Operations, the Communications Technician performs real time Telemetry, Track and Control (TT&C) of all satellites operated by Telesat Brazil and monitors ground systems according to established procedures and policies; is responsible for all aspects of successful in-orbit mission operations; serves as an interface to internal and external customers, as it relates to the daily transponder accesses; and is responsible for the overall ground station or facilities operations.

Responsibilities (Satellite In-Orbit Operations):

  • Monitor all in-orbit satellite performance.

  • Provide routine operations to maintain the satellite orbit and subsystems health.

  • Provide emergency system operations in accordance with contingency plans.

  • Respond immediately to all anomalous events and/or alarms.

  • Prepare anomaly reports to engineers for further investigation.

  • Operate, configure and monitor satellite subsystems, including Power, Thermal, Reaction Control, Attitude, TT&C, and Communications.

  • Perform stationkeeping maneuvers, battery reconditioning, eclipse operations, and other routine operations.

  • Maintain and operate ground station TT&C equipment: Antenna Control Units, Command, Ranging and Telemetry racks, and Command Encryption modules.

  • Maintain and operate front-end processors and associated computers.

  • Conduct special satellite testing as directed by satellite engineering/management.

Responsibilities (Customer Service Operations):

  • Answer incoming calls from Uplinkers, Customers, and persons requesting information.

  • Perform Uplinker performance checks and transponder-access tests, including Transponder frequency, Polarization, Deviation, and Power. Correlate power/polarization level adjustments with field technicians.

  • Monitor consoles, maintain event logs, and enter information into databases.

  • Perform troubleshooting of reported video and audio troubles using appropriate test equipment.

  • Identify and escalate service outages and abnormal conditions.

  • Assist other technicians during busy times and provide relief during breaks and lunch periods.

  • Respond to all customer trouble calls and inquiries - initiate, review, update, and clear trouble tickets.

  • Coordinate customer booking problems and transponder service extensions with Telesat Engineering.

  • Perform satellite and transponder restorations as directed by the restoration plans.

  • Assist Engineering and customer Field Engineers as requested.

  • Perform in-service 'Console Transponder Calibration' tests using supplied hardware/software.

  • Setup consoles and monitor audio teleconferencing bridges for satellite news feeds.

  • Perform calibration tests on spectrum analyzers and other equipment used in the Service Assurance Center (SAC).

  • Coordinate customer additions and disconnects' as directed by scheduled Service Orders.

  • Coordinate satellite transponder change requests as directed by Engineering.

  • Isolate and resolve satellite transponder interferences.

  • Perform certification tests for all new digital uplinkers.

Responsibilities (Ground Station/Facilities Operations):

  • Operate, configure and monitor ground station subsystems, including Electric, Air Conditioning, Communications, IT.

  • Maintain and operate ground station equipment: Antennas, RF, IF, Communications, test equipment.

  • Record all significant customer activities or internal events in the station log.

  • Maintain and update facility site documentation.

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance.

  • Prepare Performance Analysis reports, as requested by engineering/management.

  • Develop, maintain and distribute daily reports, operational shift logs and trouble ticket database to appropriate individuals on a needed basis.

  • Prepare and distribute (E-mail) daily reports.

  • File completed logs.

  • Perform shipping, ordering, handling, inventory, and testing of on-line and spare parts.

  • Monitor building, fire, and security systems.

  • Handle on-call, special and In-Charge assignments

Education and Experience required:

  • Technical specialization (Certified Technician) on Telecommunications or Electronics.

  • Ability to write, read and speak on both English and Portuguese languages.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Equipment Used

  • SCC consoles and workstations.

  • PC with Microsoft Windows and Office applications.

Decision Making and Supervision:

  • Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.

  • Receives instructions on new assignments or projects.

  • Actively seeks information and guidance to improve own performance.

  • There is no staff reporting to this position.
