Position Overview:

The Director - Operational Reporting is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and management of comprehensive reporting systems that provide timely and accurate operational performance insights. This position will lead a team of dedicated professionals and collaborate with multi-functional teams to ensure the effective development and delivery of insights through Power BI and other analytical tools. This role reports into the Senior Director of Financial Systems and Reporting.

Location:

This role is approved to be either Remote within the United States or Hybrid our of Ferguson's corporate offices in Newport News, VA, in accordance with company policy.  East Coast hours 8-5 pm.

Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop a multi-year roadmap for the operational reporting function aligned with organizational goals.

  • Lead the development of innovative reporting solutions that support strategic decision-making.

  • Collaborate with senior leadership to identify key metrics and reporting requirements.

  • Provide strategic guidance on the adoption and integration of emerging Power BI technologies.

Team Management:

  • Lead and mentor a team of Power BI managers, developers, and analysts.

  • Hire, train, and retain top talent to build an impactful and collaborative reporting team.

  • Set performance goals and ensure alignment with business objectives while conducting regular performance reviews, providing constructive feedback and career development support.

  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement

  • Ensure effective communication and collaboration within the reporting teams and across departments.

Process Improvement:

  • Evaluate and refine reporting processes to enhance data accuracy, speed, and efficiency.

  • Seek opportunities for automation and streamline manual reporting tasks.

  • Establish and update documentation for reporting processes, standards, and effective methods.

  • Conduct regular audits to assess and improve the overall health of Power BI reports and dashboards.

Performance Monitoring:

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive set of metrics for operational performance.

  • Conduct in-depth analysis (predictive and prescriptive) to identify trends, anomalies, and areas of improvement.

  • Present findings to senior management, providing clear and actionable recommendations.

  • Establish regular reporting cadences to monitor progress against performance goals.

Dashboard and Report Development:

  • Oversee the design and development of interactive and insightful Power BI dashboards and reports including the incorporation of proactive and predictive analytics.

  • Work closely with business partners to understand their reporting needs and translate them into actionable insights, including custom reporting solutions tailored to specific partner needs.

  • Drive continuous improvement in the user experience and design of Power BI solutions including the delivery of training sessions for end-users on how to use reporting tools effectively.

  • Actively collaborate with power users and end users to enhance the visual appeal and usability of reports.

Data Integration:

  • Collaborate with data engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of data from various sources into Power BI.

  • Work closely with the Business Intelligence team to prioritize new data sources and integration projects.

  • Drive initiatives to enhance data quality and accessibility.

  • Implement data validation processes to ensure the accuracy and reliability of integrated data.

Performance Optimization:

  • Continuously monitor and optimize the performance of Power BI solutions to meet or exceed user expectations.

  • Implement measures to enhance the speed and efficiency of reporting processes.

  • Conduct regular performance tuning activities for Power BI reports and dashboards.

  • Stay abreast of Power BI updates and implement performance enhancements accordingly.

Training and Development:

  • Deliver training and development opportunities for the reporting team to know the latest with Power BI advancements and industry trends.

  • Create a supportive culture that values continuous learning and professional development.

  • Organize workshops and training sessions for business users to improve their proficiency in using Power BI.

  • Encourage and support team members in obtaining relevant certifications and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Information Technology, Finance, Accounting Information Systems or related field. Master's degree preferred.

  • Demonstrable experience (8+ years) in enterprise reporting, with a focus on Power BI, Tableau, or similar visualization software, with at least 5 years in a leadership or management role.

  • Proven experience in leading and running high-performing teams, with strong interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills.

  • Advanced knowledge of SQL, DAX, and other data query languages.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a strategic reporting roadmap.

  • Experience in leading and driving successful Power BI adoption initiatives across diverse business functions with In-depth knowledge of data visualization standard processes.

  • Demonstrable experience in implementing and optimizing Power BI solutions for large-scale enterprises.

  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects, deadlines, and partners simultaneously.

  • Deep understanding of business operations, processes, and standard methodologies, with a strategic approach and ability to align reporting initiatives with business objectives.

  • Familiarity with cloud-based data platforms and their integration with Power BI (e.g., Azure, AWS, Google Cloud).
