NOTE: This role is HYBRID and requires 2 days a week in our Walnut Creek, CA office.

The External Communications Lead, will be a driving force in shaping the public narrative for one of the most trusted brands in Northern California. The role of this team members is to effectively convey our mission and impact to the public, oversee PR agency relationships, build relationships with key stakeholders, develop and execute comprehensive communication strategies and manage external communications in order to enhance AAA’s brand and reputation.

RESPONSIBILITIES / JOB DUTIES

  • Strategic Communications

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive external communications strategy aligned with organizational goals.

  • Identify opportunities to increase brand awareness and positive media coverage in Northern California.

  • Create and manage crisis communications plans.

  • Media Relations and PR Agency Management

  • Serve as primary media contact for Northern California.

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key media outlets and journalists.

  • Draft and distribute press releases, media advisories, and statements.

  • Manage relationships with PR agencies, including strategy development, campaign execution, performance evaluation, and retainer management.

  • Coordinate media appearances and events.

  • Stakeholder Engagement

  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Represent the organization at public events, conferences, and speaking engagements.

  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure consistent messaging across all external communications.

  • Content Development and Management

  • Oversee the creation of high-quality content for various platforms.

  • Ensure brand consistency and messaging alignment across all external communications.

  • Team Collaboration

  • Collaborate with the team and other departments to align communications efforts with organizational priorities.

  • Provides communications counsel to senior leadership.

    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

  • Detail oriented.

  • Passion for storytelling.

  • Strong media relations experience and established network of media contacts in Northern California, including on-camera/spokesperson experience.

  • Knowledge of Northern California’s media landscape, political environment, and key issues.

  • Proven ability to work with senior leaders.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and drive results as an individual contributor.

  • Experience in crisis communications and issues management is a plus.

  • Comfort managing multiple work streams simultaneously, and ability to prioritize effectively.

  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, etc.)

    EDUCATION, COMPETENCIES, CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES

  • Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree plus 8 years/or High School diploma plus 12 years of progressive communications experience to include a minimum of 5 years in media relations/spokesperson roles.

  • Preferred Requirements:

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

We target between minimum and midpoint of the range, and all offers are subject to a fair pay analysis - Compensation Range: Min: $124,853.00 - Mid: $156,065.00- Max: $187,279.00
