Location: Taconic Biosciences is seeking a Lab Technician ET & Cryo to join our dedicated Embryology team at the Germantown Satellite site.

The Pay Range: $22 - $25 per hour. Exact compensation may vary based on several factors. These factors include, but are not limited to, geographic location, experience, training, education, and local market conditions, with this the upper end of the range is not always likely to be offered.

The Schedule: Monday – Thursday a 9-hour shift and Friday a 4 hour shift. Starting times are flexible between 5:30am – 7:00am. Rotating weekend shifts, once every 2 months (subject to change based on staffing).

The Role:

As a Laboratory Technician specializing in ET & Cryo, you'll play a crucial role in the cryopreservation of embryos and sperm, as well as conducting surgeries for embryo transfers, particularly for projects demanding live recoveries. Your responsibilities will encompass meticulous animal care, efficient scheduling of workflow, vigilant maintenance and monitoring of laboratory equipment, and ensuring a steady supply inventory. Beyond these foundational duties, you'll actively engage in special projects aimed at enhancing processes and resolving challenges, providing you with ample opportunities to refine your skills and pave the way for future advancement within Taconic.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Maintain all necessary logs, paperwork and reports for cryopreservation of sperm and embryo.

  • Perform all procedures and follow SOPs required for embryo transfers and cryopreservation of sperm and embryo. 

  • Prepare tissue culture media and dishes required for the procedures.

  • Prepare hormones necessary to super-ovulate donor mice and rats.

  • Inject hormones necessary to super-ovulate donor mice and rats.

  • Prepare all materials and reagents.  Test and record all new media when applicable.

  • Receive media and supplies and maintain required inventory of critical raw materials.

  • Monitor lab equipment to assure calibration. Maintain logbooks.

  • Maintain neat, accurate and timely records on all projects; maintain appropriate electronic records.

  • Perform sperm cryopreservation and embryo cryopreservation.

  • Perform embryo transfer into pseudo-pregnant recipient mice and rats.

  • Euthanize animals on a daily basis (primary method for mice is via cervical dislocation)

  • Perform control checks on cryopreservation runs.

  • Follow procedures for breeding of specific strains as stated on the project detail report.

  • Follow dress procedures.

  • Maintain cleanliness of immediate area and general lab areas.

  • Monitor temperature and humidity; report problems to appropriate people.

  • Communicate with team coordinator Sr. Lab Specialist and all departments as necessary.

  • Assist with training new lab staff.

  • Take part in studies and special projects.

  • Complete necessary documentation in/and be able to successfully navigate and trouble shoot in Animal master

  • Complete necessary documentation in/and be able to successfully navigate and trouble shot in Mice Age.

  • Communicate with project management as needed regarding any erroneous information found in either Animal Master or Mice Age or any questions regarding such.

  • Prepare plates for Frozen Sperm IVF

  • Prepare plates for Fresh IVF

  • Prepare plates for culture

  • Act as a back-up lab assistant

  • Dual site storage of cryopreserved material

  • Collect Tissues/organs upon customer request

  • Continuous inventory of ALL Cryopreserved material including material split with AL2 site.

  • Prepare anesthesia for live recovery surgeries.

  • Thaw embryos for Embryo transfers.

  • Count and prepare embryos created for transfer to the ET lab at Gnotobiotics.

  • communicate embryo counts to the receiving department (ET lab) at Gnotobiotics

  • Complete and discard requests received and complete any necessary documentation of such.

  • Perform continuous review of stored tail samples for disposal

Education and Experience:

  • Associate’s degree (A. A.) from a two-year college or technical school, or equivalent experience.

  • Previous experience in standardized or commonly used procedures, operations, or equipment operation, typically requiring moderate training or experience.

  • Proficiency in reading and understanding simple instructions, as well as basic writing skills.

  • Basic mathematical skills for technical decision-making.

  • Strong reasoning ability to apply instructions and solve problems in standardized situations.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated strength in collaborative teamwork and interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to general molecular biology/nucleic acid laboratory conditions including but not limited to, regular handling of hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals and reagents, radioactive materials, and use of non-hazardous and potentially hazardous equipment.  The work environment will be temperature and noise controlled.  The working hours shall be generally 40 hours per week.  Additionally, the workload may require overtime hours.
