National Park Service Maintenance Mechanic in United States

Summary This position is located in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, in the Facility Management Division. Responsibilities Performs routine maintenance, modifications, preventive maintenance, and adjustments on exterior structures, buildings, equipment, related utilities, and grounds, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations of carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, roofing, and other related trades. Utilizes a variety of materials, tools, and equipment associated with the repair and maintenance of structures and grounds. Operates a government owned boat on the lake and river in order to access visitor facilities and other points of concern to clean, service, and maintain these areas. May perform janitorial duties, cleaning and stocking restrooms, vault toilets, visitor centers and park offices as determined by staffing levels. May pick up litter in parking areas, trail heads, and along park roads. Bullfrog, Utah is a small, remote, in-park community of approximately 300 residents during the summer and about 100 residents in the winter. Amenities include a marina, marina store and gas docks, seasonal lodge and restaurant, gas station/convenience store and garage, and urgent care clinic, and a K-12 school. Teacher/student ratio is 1 teacher per 2-5 students. Full service communities are in Green River, Utah (113 miles) and Price, Utah (143 miles) which has a small hospital and dentists. Major services are available in Cortez, Durango, and Grand Junction, Colorado, or Page, Arizona, all 3 to 5 hours away via all-weather highways. The Bullfrog Sub-District encompasses beautiful red-rock canyon country. Bullfrog is the main access point to Lake Powell in the Uplake District and visitation is heavy in the summer. Summer temperatures run to the low 100's and winter temperatures are in the 30's with sunshine most days of the year. Recreation runs the spectrum of outdoor activities with backpacking, canyoneering, skiing (water and snow), boating, whitewater sports, hunting and fishing all within a few hours' drive and some within walking distance of the housing area. This is an active outdoor community and social events are common. Halls Crossing, Utah is a small, remote, in-park community of approximately 100 residents during the summer and about 5 residents in the winter. Amenities at Halls crossing are very limited. Halls Crossing is a short boat ride to Bullfrog where amenities include a marina, marina store and gas docks, seasonal lodge and restaurant, gas station/convenience store and garage, and urgent care clinic, and a K-12 school. Teacher/student ratio is 1 teacher per 2-5 students. Full service communities are in Blanding, Utah (90 miles) and Moab, Utah (162 miles) which has a small hospital and dentists. Major services are available in Cortez, Durango, and Grand Junction, Colorado, or Page, Arizona, all 3 to 5 hours away via all-weather highways. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime. Occupancy of government quarters is required. You will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 1 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. You will be required to operate a motorboat and must be able to obtain and maintain a motorboat operation course certificate (MOCC) within the first year of employment. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc. Knowledge of materials Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. In preparing your application, describe in detail the experience and training which you have had that specifically prepared you for this job and to perform the duties described for this job: (1) maintenance and repair of grounds; (2) maintenance and repair of exterior structures and buildings, (3) maintenance and repair of related utilities; (4) journeyman knowledge and skills in the following trades: Carpentry, Plumbing, Painting, Masonry, Water Treatment Plant Operations, or Roofing. Experience should be clearly described and documented in your resume. Additional Information This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are NOT suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
