Talen Energy Manager, Quantitative Market Risk in United States

Talen’s Quantitative Market Risk Management Team operates within the broader Risk Management Organization reporting to the CFO. The Risk group routinely interacts across many functions and at all levels of the organization, including C-Suite. Here are a few of the things this role is responsible for:

  • Working within the Risk Team across Market Risk, Credit Risk, Quantitative Risk, and Risk Controls to ensure a strong Risk Framework and understanding of Talen’s inherent risk in managing a fleet of generation assets that use multiple fuel sources.

  • Being a leader of a team including managing the team’s responsibilities, performance, and their training and development.

  • Collaboration with Commercial, Operations, Finance, Investor Relations, IT and other groups to support and improve business outcomes.

  • Forecasting Fleet Generation using cQuant by accurately configuring Unit Characteristics and understanding the unique attributes of units and grid contingencies on generation outcomes. This may include post processing model customization.

  • Articulate, with clear verbal and written communication, the modeled assumptions, and consequential results of those assumptions.

  • Generate and explain GMaR, VaR, Price Risk, and Positions daily.

  • Working with Asset Managers and Operations teams to remain current with how the fleet is operating and being optimized within the current month.

  • Perform sensitivity testing on the total portfolio including generation and hedges to identify hidden risks and hotspots.

  • Test the model and portfolio with other ad hoc model assumptions and market assumptions to inform strategic decisions and present results in an organized manner.

  • Identify areas of improvement for automation and collaborate across groups and IT to prioritize, manage, and implement new solutions.

  • Provide analysis for Commercial teams and others as requested for new strategies or structured transactions.

  • Assist across all areas of risk as required.

Talen operates as a very flat organization. As a result, the team has responsibilities and visibility across the organization - from plant operations to senior leadership. The quantitative risk management team has developed a strong culture of team ownership for the accuracy, quality, and timeliness of information provided.

To be successful in this role a candidate will need to have:

Technical Skills:

  • Analytical / quantitative experience / training, strong problem-solving skills, ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues.

  • Strong proficiency in database management, Excel, VBA, SQL, and Python.

  • Proficiency in working with large data sets (often 500 MB to 10 GB each), with the ability to both drill into details, and interpret and summarize data at a high-level.

  • Proficiency with data sourcing & retrieval using SQL, Power Query, API, and Python.

  • Proficiency with data preparation, aggregation, statistical analysis, etc. (via SQL, Excel, VBA, and Python).

Professional Skills:

  • Strong Communicator: effective verbal and written communication skills across groups and seniority levels; ability to effectively listen, ask questions, answer questions, present results and explain issues with those who have less technical expertise, and document discussions, progress, and solutions.

  • Capturing the Talen and Risk Management vision and executing every day toward that vision.

  • Resourcefulness: thrives in an environment where they are expected to identify questions and find answers in a timely manner.

  • Multi-tasking: Ability to track and perform tasks related to multiple requests from multiple people, identify conflicting priorities or timelines, and proactively manage constraints and expectations.

  • Time Management: ability to clearly identify those needs which must be met within defined timelines vs those with flexible timelines; and manage time and expectations to ensure all deliverables with defined timelines are delivered on time, and with expected quality.

  • Desire to Learn: strong interest in learning about business issues and needs, technical platforms and tools available to address those needs, and ways to better align the two.

The following qualifications apply:

  • An advanced degree in a business-related field or equivalent industry experience.

  • 8+ years in power and gas industry, preferably with physical power plants.

  • 5+ years of managing and leading teams.
