GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Join the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) as a Professional Scientist (Natural Resources Analyst, ENNR09) and specialize in Wyoming's geology. This position offers a unique opportunity to delve into surface and subsurface resource potential, hydrocarbon generation, and mountain building and basin history, contributing to the WSGS’ mission of promoting the beneficial and environmentally sound use of Wyoming's geologic, mineral, and energy resources.
What we are looking for
Education: Bachelor's degree in the sciences or a closely related field (master's degree in geology preferred)
Experience: 0–3 years of progressive work experience in the sciences
Skills: Strong writing and public-speaking skills; familiarity with subsurface geologic interpretation software (e.g., Petra), GIS (ArcPro), and well log interpretation; broad background in petroleum geology, structural geology, economic geology, or airborne geophysics; strong collaboration skills; ability to conduct independent office and fieldwork
Wyoming Geology: Familiarity with Wyoming's geology and natural resources is a strong plus

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.
Data analysis: Use subsurface geological data, such as geophysical well logs and cores, to determine the structure and stratigraphy of Wyoming’s basins
Mapping and modeling: Use advanced software to create detailed 2D and 3D geological maps and models
Fieldwork: Plan and conduct field studies to collect geological samples, and meticulously document geological formations through measured stratigraphic sections
Reporting: Prepare detailed technical reports that summarize findings and provide recommendations
Project management: Assist in managing projects, including budgeting and timeline management; opportunity to work as part of a team of fellow geologists
Resource forecasting: Apply your expertise in Wyoming’s energy sectors to forecast trends in pricing and production, essential for state revenue planning
Public outreach: Respond to inquiries from the public about Wyoming’s geology, deliver engaging presentations, and represent the agency at public outreach events. .
Qualifications
PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:
A master’s degree in geology, with a background in oil and gas geology, carbon sequestration, airborne geophysics, geologic modeling, groundwater, structural geology, or economic geology is preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor's (typically in The Sciences)
Experience:
0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in The Sciences) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Natural Resources Specialist
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in The Sciences) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Natural Resources Specialist

Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Occasional travel may be required for this position, including multiple nights per month away from Laramie during field season. Applicants must meet the requirements to operate a state vehicle. Must be eligible to work in the United States with a valid driver’s license.
Applicants must be capable of strenuous work in sometimes difficult environments and meet the requirements to operate a state vehicle.
