Description

We are currently seeking a skilled Operating Room Technician or Surgical Technician to fill a Part-time, Extra-Help vacancy. You will join our dynamic team of professionals committed to the mission of our safety net hospital to: “partner with our community to maximize health outcomes for those who face challenges accessing high value, comprehensive medical care due to the traditional health care system’s inability to meet their needs based on social, cultural, and economic factors.”

Working side-by-side with surgeons and nurses, major surgical areas are represented, including orthopedics, general, gynecology, peripheral cardiovascular, renal, ophthalmology, plastic and neurosurgery. The service has a focus on providing for both Ambulatory and In-patient procedures. The team also rotates on-call responsibilities to support after hour cases from the Emergency Department.

The ideal candidate is a graduate of an accredited school of operating room or surgical technology, although 1-2 years of experience in an acute care operating room is preferred, new graduates will be considered.

NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Extra-help hours are dependent on the business needs of the department and therefore work hours may vary from week to week. Extra help employees shall not exceed 1,040 hours of work per fiscal year. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Scrub, gown and glove self and other team members in preparation for surgical procedures.

  • Participate in setting up sterile filed of an operating room prior to surgery, opening sterile packs and arranging instruments and supplies according to surgical procedures.

  • Hand sterile instruments and surgical supplies to the surgeon during an operation.

  • Count sponges, needles and instruments with Circulator.

  • Receive specimens and cultures from Surgeon; pass to Circulator according to the direction of the Surgeon.

  • Maintain sterile field for duration of procedure.

  • Assist in cleaning and restocking operating rooms with sterile supplies.

  • Assist with transfer of patient from OR table or bed.

  • Dispose of or replace used materials appropriately.

  • Care and maintenance of equipment and supplies.

  • Practice appropriate infection control and aseptic practice, and environmental safety practices.

  • Train or precept others in the role.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Basic anatomy and physiology.

  • Practices and techniques of asepsis and their application.

  • Various types of instruments and surgical supplies used in surgical procedures.

Skill/Ability to:

  • Understand the instructions of the medical and nursing staff and to carry them out precisely and quickly.

  • Engage in continuous active work requiring long periods of standing and physical exertion.

  • Exercise a reasonable amount of manual dexterity in the handling of instruments and surgical supplies.

  • Work closely and effectively with members of the surgical team.

  • Work effectively in emergency or tense situations and be alert to the needs of surgeons during surgery.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

A typical way to qualify is: Completion of an approved training program in the duties of an Operating Room Technician.
