Description

If so, the Pre-School Instructor role is meant for you!

The City of Fairfield Parks & Recreation Department is looking for energetic, dedicated instructors to join our preschool team! As a preschool instructor you’ll help preschoolers develop their problem-solving skills, guide them in both structured learning and play time, and prepare them with the knowledge they’ll need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond.

Under general supervision, Pre-School Instructors lead and coordinate activities in the City's Pre-School program. Instructors are leaders of other staff and volunteers and critical to the success of the program.

Please Note: Positions are part-time, year-round, non-benefited, and limited to working no more than 1,000 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Candidates must be available to work a varied schedule to meet program needs, including weekdays, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is typically performed at an activity site, community center and/or in an outdoor environment in various types of weather, with frequent interruptions, deadlines,

complaints, and peak workload periods. Position may require working nights and weekends. Incumbents may be exposed to noise, moisture, dust, vibrations, heat and cold. Basic cleaning of facilities may include exposure to cleaning agents. Work may take place and require travel in a vehicle to and from off-site indoor and outdoor locations throughout the City.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work may include prolonged sitting and standing, as well as light to moderate lifting up to fifty (50) pounds, carrying, reaching, stooping and pulling. Work requires manual dexterity, clear (understandable) speech, visual and hearing acuity. The ability to actively participate in recreational activities (including games), and work outdoors in both heat and cold, are also required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

This is a single level classification where incumbents are expected to possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the full range of duties. Incumbents in this classification are differentiated from the Recreation Specialist II in that they are expected to lead the work of other employees coordinating the activities within the Pre-School program.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives general supervision from a Recreation Program Specialist or Coordinator, or a supervisor or manager assigned to the service area. Incumbents of this class do not exercise supervision, but may provide lead direction to subordinate staff as well as program participants.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • 12 units of Early Childhood education is required.

Experience:

  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience leading and assisting with a variety of activities and programs in the recreation field in a position equivalent to a Recreation Specialist II is required.

  • Experience in assisting preschool classes is preferred.

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE:

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is required.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist with Preschool program operations, classes and events.

  • Lead assigned workers in the performance of their daily activities.

  • Responsible for monitoring program and site rules, policies and regulations.

  • Assist with distribution of site and program publicity including flyers and press releases.

  • Provide courteous and professional service to all program participants, facility users, City personnel and the public.

  • Answer questions from the public and provide information to individuals and groups regarding program offerings and coordination of services.

  • Use computer for data entry, roster printing, and registration processing.

  • Assist with ordering, maintaining, and taking inventory of program supplies.

  • Monitor behavior of program participants.

  • Conduct set up and clean-up of facility and equipment; may be charged with the opening and closing duties.

  • Operate copiers, fax machines, computers and other program-specific equipment.

  • Assist with miscellaneous office tasks, i.e. retrieving and distributing mail, receiving shipments, delivering items to program sites.

Knowledge & Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • A wide variety of recreation programs and activities including active and passive games, arts and crafts, dramatic arts, nature and science, and special events.

  • Modern office equipment, including computers.

Ability to:

  • Work with a wide variety of recreation programs and activities including active and passive games, arts and crafts, dramatic arts, nature and science, and special events.

  • Use equipment in classroom setting.

  • Assist with distribution of marketing and publicity material.

  • Work cooperatively with other departments, outside agencies, and the general public.

  • Work cooperatively in a team environment and nurture the development of staff.

  • Maintain a flexible work schedule dependent upon program requirements.

  • Possess and maintain a positive "can do" attitude.

  • Understand and follow directions.

  • Display good customer service and communication techniques.

  • Use a computer terminal to enter data.

  • Maintain accurate calculations and records.

  • Drive a vehicle safely and efficiently.

  • Lift and move heavy objects.
