Job Summary

Under general direction, is responsible for performing recreational work involving the creation and implementation of one or more recreational activity programs such as math or science instruction, organized sports, music, nature, camping, or arts and crafts, on a City-wide basis. Collects and analyzes data regarding the recreational needs of the various cultural and economic groups in the metropolitan area to develop and implement a specialized recreation program to fit these needs. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.

The Parks and Recreation Department offers the Summer Youth Program at designated community centers and select school sites in partnership with local area school districts. The Summer Youth Program is offered for youth ages 6 - 12 at school sites and 6 - 14 at community centers.

This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

Work Location

Various community centers and school sites throughout the city; At the Department's discretion, the work location and days/hours may be subject to change.

Work Hours

Various Shifts: Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Essential Job Functions

  • Plans and conducts City-wide programs for all ages, creating lesson plans, registering participants, and corresponding with participants and parents.

  • Acts as a resource person in the given specialty to other Recreation Specialists or leaders, and to community civic groups.

  • Acts as representative of the Parks and Recreation Department at meetings or conferences involving the supervised specialty.

  • Performs purchasing and procurement duties for all instruments, tools or materials necessary for the conduct of a given specialty program.

  • Keeps financial and activity records and submits periodic and special reports.

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

  • Recreational Program Specialties:

Dance:

  • Develops, supervises, and conducts square, folk, ballroom, and other types of dancing for all age groups.

  • Demonstrates dance movements and instructs classes.

Fitness & Sports:

  • Plans and conducts City-wide sports programs.

  • Demonstrates activities.

  • Sports programs lend themselves to league activities such as softball, basketball, volleyball, and football for participants of all ages.

  • Plans and conducts a phase of a City-wide aquatic program if assigned to Aquatics section.

Music:

  • Demonstrates and instructs on good posture and operation of various

instruments which may involve moving around the room to provide various

types of assistance to participants.

Art:

  • Plans, supervises, and conducts arts or crafts program for all age levels, which may include position and movements to assist younger children.

Math:

  • Plans, supervises, and conducts math lessons and activities for all age levels, which may include position and movements to assist younger children.

Science:

  • Plans, supervises, and conducts science lessons and experiments for all age levels, which may include position and movements to assist younger children.

All Recreational Program Specialties: May be subject to traveling and

working at different sites as needed, transporting supplies and

equipment weighing 5 to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 20 pounds

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Two (2) years of experience in community center or related activities.

  • Valid Class "C: Texas Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Art, Math, or Science.

  • Experience leading classes for various age groups and various topics.

  • Must have own transportation to travel between various sites.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of various principles and techniques of their recreational program specialty.

  • Ability to originate ideas and concepts and translate them into visual imagery.

  • Ability to effectively develop programs through evaluation of their community.

  • Ability to keep accurate and updated records and provide concise reports.

  • Ability to keep precise accounting of deposited funds and provide accurate reports on status of funds.

  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.

  • Working conditions are in both indoor and outdoor recreation facilities.
