Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for serving as an advocate for the social-emotional well-being of children at Pre-K 4 SA, taking a lead role in developing and implementing a high quality, comprehensive Social Emotional Learning framework for early childhood. Provides professional development and consultation to help Education Center staff better understand the social-emotional development of young children. Works collaboratively with other Pre-K 4 SA staff to provide the highest quality early childhood education. Supports teachers in identifying appropriate referrals for special education services, but does not conduct diagnostic assessments for the purposes of special education services. May exercises supervision over assigned staff.

Essential Job Functions

  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to find effective solutions to learning and behavior problems.

  • Provide professional development on child development and how it affects learning and behavior, including diversity in child development.

  • Participates in small-group and large-group activities. Models positive communication by interacting with children at eye-level.

  • Strengthen working relationships between teachers, parents, and service providers in the community.

  • Consult with teachers to support the social-emotional development and mental health status of students.

  • Evaluate and make recommendations for improvements on learning environments and the effectiveness of academic and behavior management programs.

  • Provides parent education as needed in regards to mental health needs and child development.

  • Conducts training in social skills and anger management.

  • Help families and schools manage crises, such as death, illness, or community trauma.

  • Promote tolerance, understanding, and appreciation of diversity within the school community.

  • Develop programs to make schools safer and more effective learning environments.

  • Collaborate with school staff and community agencies to provide services directed at improving psychological and physical health.

  • Develop partnerships with parents and teachers to promote healthy school environments.

  • Identify and implement programs and strategies to improve schools.

  • Use evidence-based research to develop and/or recommend effective interventions.

  • Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records, and other required documents.

  • Conduct home visits as needed.

  • In the case of an emergency situation, may be required to lift and carry students weighing up to 50 pounds to move students during dangerous situations.

  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Master's Degree in School Psychology or related field from an accredited college or university.

  • One (1) year of experience working with children ages 3-5.

  • One (1) year of experience working with students of diverse backgrounds.

  • Valid Class "C" Driver's License.

  • Licensure as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology (LSSP) from the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years experience as a School Psychologist or equivalent experiences.

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

  • Ability to pass DFPS (Texas Department of Family Protective Services) background check.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current principles and practices utilized by counselors and social workers.

  • Knowledge of developmental, social and behavioral issues of young students.

  • Knowledge of standard program evaluation methods and report writing procedures.

  • Skill in utilizing a personal computer and associated software programs.

  • Ability to interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations pertaining to special education.

  • Ability to plan a balance, comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program.

  • Ability to respect and respond competently to the culture, traditions, lifestyle, language, and values of each family.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Center staff, students and parents.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.

  • Ability to perform all the essential functions of the position, with or without accommodations.

  • Primary working conditions are inside an office environment; however, employee will be required to drive personal vehicle in the performance of assigned tasks.
