Job Summary

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of side loader truck. Collects materials and provides collection service to the citizens of the City of San Antonio on any assigned route. Transports collected materials to appropriate City disposal or processing facilities. Exercises no supervision.

    Work Schedule

    Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 6:30 AM - 4:30 PM ( 4 days a week/10 hours per day)

    The Solid Waste Management Department rewards eligible employees through performance and safety incentive pay. The Department is committed to providing safe, efficient, and high-quality municipal solid waste management services and recognizes that employee performance and safe work practices are key components in the accomplishment of daily Department operations. For this reason, the Department has established and supports employee incentive pay for both employee performance and safety. To be eligible to receive 5% performance and 5% safety incentive pay you must meet the following criteria: Be a full-time employee, must be able to complete work as required, must have completed the six month probationary period, if a new external hire or if promoted from outside of the Department.

Essential Job Functions

  • Operates and maintains side loader truck.

  • Prepares vehicle for daily assignment by performing pre-trip inspections.

  • Maintains personal protective equipment and prepares safety equipment to be used during the workday.

  • Collects all materials from assigned route, frequently lifting and carrying brush or bulky waste weighing 40 pounds.

  • Unloads collected materials at disposal or processing facilities.

  • Prepares driver's report at the end of the day to report any malfunctions with the truck.

  • Cleans cab of assigned truck at the end of the day and washes truck once a week.

  • Courteously responds to citizen's inquiries about departmental services and programs.

  • Delivers literature which identifies acceptable and non-acceptable materials.

  • Operates assigned vehicle in a safe manner in accordance with all safety rules and traffic laws.

  • Performs other related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

  • Six (6) months of experience operating a vehicle requiring a CDL or completion of the Solid Waste Management Department's Apprentice II Program

  • Valid Texas Commercial Class 'B' Driver's License.

  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

  • Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of vehicle safety procedures and practices.

  • Knowledge of commercial vehicle operating procedures.

  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance.

  • Ability to safely operate a side loader vehicle in heavy traffic and in all types of weather conditions.

  • Ability to learn City streets.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and co-workers.

  • Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with co-workers, supervisors and the general public.

  • Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.

  • Working conditions are primarily outside with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dust; damp/wet surfaces, and high noise level.
