The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

The position (staff scientist) will provide research support and training in the laboratory of Dr. Laurie Steiner in the Department of Pediatrics. The candidate will have the primary responsibility for planning, designing, and executing experiments aimed at understanding the transcriptional and epigenetic control of erythropoiesis. The work will involve functional genomics experiments involving both cell culture and mice. As part of this position, the candidate will be expected to interpret data and make recommendations regarding the design and optimization of future experiments, contribute to writing of research proposals and progress reports, and preparation of regulatory documentation required for performance of research. The candidate will also be expected to interact and collaborate with other laboratories in the Department of Pediatrics, the Cancer Center, the Center for RNA Biology, as well as collaborators at other institutions. The candidate will write manuscripts and present findings at scientific meetings. Other expectations include training staff and undergrad/graduate students in the lab.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

With the assistance of Dr. Steiner and latitude for independent judgement, the individual will direct complex research projects through the design and performing of experiments. Additionally, the individual will contribute to writing of research proposals and preparation of regulatory documentation required for performance of research. The individual will write protocols and optimize methods and techniques related to project design and conduct. Primary research will involve a wide variety of approaches and techniques, including but not limited to mammalian cell culture of primary and transformed erythroid cells, and cellular, molecular, imaging, and biochemical techniques. In addition, the individual will be involved performing murine experiments and in maintaining mouse colony.

Analyzes and evaluates experimental data and interprets results within the scope of the study; assesses the importance of findings in relation to the general research program. Prepares written reports on all phases of laboratory work involved in research projects. Contributes to the design, interpretation and final writing of research publications - thereby meeting expectations for co- authorship of scientific publications.

Provide direct guidance and support for junior lab members and trainees. This will include but is not limited to: directing initial training of junior staff/trainees in laboratory techniques and instrumentation procedures, assisting with troubleshooting assays, experimental design, data interpretation, clarifying primary literature, providing guidance in preparing presentations, and developing a good moral and ethical research environment.

Assist Dr. Steiner in preparing manuscripts, writing research grant applications, and assembling regulatory documents. This will involve providing original writing, critical feedback and edits. In doing so, the individual is expected to keep abreast with current research through literature review and attending and presenting at scientific seminars, meetings, and research conferences.

Discussion of research in progress will occur periodically both one-on-one with Dr. Steiner and in a formal presentation setting. This will include preparing and presenting verbal and/or written reports on research progress, results, and relevant scientific literature.

Assist the lab manager with additional laboratory management tasks including ordering reagents and materials, and other general laboratory maintenance as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Doctoral degree required.

2 years of relevant postdoctoral training; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Effective lab bench and interpersonal skills; works well in a team- oriented culture and has effective oral and written communication skills required.

Expertise in biochemical, cell and molecular and cellular biology techniques, in vivo gene transfer, and mouse models, and the ability to publish and present research data required.
