SUPPORT INVESTIGATOR: DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The Support Investigator to determine the location and financial status of individuals financially responsible for the support of their children. The incumbent verifies the absence of a legally responsible relative from a household, locates the individual and secures financial support from them. This position differs from that of Social Services Investigator in that there is no responsibility for fraud investigation. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Child Support Unit Supervisor with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Will perform related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelors Degree in Human Services, Social Sciences or related field, OR

B. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associates Degree in Human Services, Social Sciences or related field AND one (1) year experience in examining, investigating or evaluating claims/applications, OR

C. Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and two (2) years experience in examining, investigating or evaluation claims/applications; OR

D. Any equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), or (C) above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

-Possession of a valid New York State drivers license appropriate to the vehicles operated or otherwise demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the job.

-Criminal background investigation required before appointment to position.
