Job Overview

Reporting to the Head Rowing Coach, the Assistant Coach recruits, retains, supervises, and coaches NCAA Division I student-athletes on the crew, under the guidelines of Georgetown, the Intercollegiate Rowing Association and NCAA. Carries out duties within the stated philosophy of Georgetown athletics and its educational mission. Follows all institutional, conference and NCAA rules and regulations to insure compliance. With general policy guidance from the Head Coach, the Assistant Coach will make decisions to successfully achieve department goals and objectives, and be accountable for the development of team policies and goals. Assistant Coach will actively participate in practices and competitions, including, but not limited to, race preparation (including developing strategies and race plans), practice planning, skill and video sessions (including working individually with, advising, and critiquing student-athletes to develop and improve their skills), scouting opposing teams and athletes (including analyzing their strengths and weaknesses), scheduling, weight training and fitness programs. The Assistant Coach will evaluate prospective student-athletes, analyze and determine their abilities and whether they may succeed athletically and academically at Georgetown. Will recommend or determine which prospective student-athletes the team should focus its time and resources to recruit, and contact and recruit such prospects. Additional duties include the monitoring of student-athlete academic performance; conducting, advising, and counseling student-athletes regarding performance and conduct; identifying and addressing student-athlete welfare issues; and, representing the University in donor/alumni public relations and community programs.

Work Interactions

Reports to the Head Men’s Rowing Coach. The Head Coach reports to the Director of Athletics (or designee). There are approximately 50 positions (full-time, part-time and volunteer) called Assistant Coach who support all intercollegiate programs. There is one full-time Assistant Coach and one 10-month Assistant Coach for men’s rowing.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Minimum 3-5 years of coaching experience in the sport of rowing.

  • Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of rowing.

  • Knowledge of strength and conditioning programs and routines.

  • Knowledge of NCAA and IRA regulations and guidelines governing the recruitment, academic eligibility requirements, and retention of student-athletes.

  • Knowledge of athletics recruitment methods and techniques. Ability to create a database for all prospects.

  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills that demonstrate an ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.

  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record; must be insurable.

  • Proficient in computer use and relevant Microsoft applications.

  • Available weekends and evenings.

  • Background check completed as a condition of employment with Georgetown University.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certification:

Current First Aid/CPR certification is preferred.

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$39,930.00 - $59,694.78

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
