Requirements

In accordance with a detailed cleaning plan, the Carpet and Floor Care Specialist performs general and specific cleaning and maintenance tasks to provide a clean, safe, and pleasant physical environment. They perform other tasks as assigned in emergency or unusual situations, including but not limited to snow and ice removal, clean up associated with water or fire damage, and special event support. Performing duties that involve using standard tools, equipment, materials and supplies of the trade and observing all safety rules, regulations, and precautions, additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Clean bathrooms to support University operations as assigned and/or as scheduled, performing a thorough cleaning of toilets, urinals, bathtubs, shower stalls, shower curtains top to bottom, shower walls top to bottom, grout, bathroom floors, walls and partitions top to bottom.

  • Scrub, buff, and mop the floors, as well as vacuum, shampoo, and extract the carpets.

  • Clean hallways, entranceways, stairways, and elevators, and replace burned out light bulbs, empty or sift ash urns, clean, wash, and dust inside and outside windows as well as sills of all exterior windows.

  • Clean elevator tracks, sweep and mop floors free of debris and dirt, clean stairwells, landings, stairways, exterior entrances, ramps, and landings.

  • Spot clean and shampoo carpets and upholstery using the acceptable method of cleaning, dust and mop floors, dust and clean supply and return vents, replace burned out light bulbs, clean trash containers, dust high and low, and clean light diffusers.

  • Suggest improvements in service to improve unit operations, providing supervisors and department management with advice and suggestions regarding work methods, procedures, parts, tools, and related matters for the purpose of improving the effectiveness and cost of service.

Work Interactions

This position reports directly to one of the Custodial Supervisors (one of four night supervisors, one of three Residential Custodial Supervisors, an Evening Custodial Supervisor, a Day Custodial Supervisor, or a Weekend Custodial Supervisor). The position may report indirectly to a Night Operations Manager depending on the shift assigned. The incumbent’s work constitutes a direct service of the department to ensure a comfortable, safe and clean environment in which the University community can live, learn and work. S/he represents the department with the University community and its visitors.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • HS or GED preferred

  • One year of custodial work experience is preferred

  • A valid and current driver’s license from Maryland, Virginia, or District of Columbia

  • Basic knowledge of English including the ability to read, write and speak English with understanding in order to read and understand product label instructions and University policies and procedures

  • Ability to relate custodial and maintenance problems clearly to supervisor and/or the Work Management Center

  • Required to complete a training program in building cleaning
