In accordance with a detailed cleaning plan, the Floor Care Specialist performs general and specific cleaning and maintenance tasks to provide a clean, safe, and pleasant physical environment. S/he performs other tasks as assigned in emergency or unusual situations with specific guidance from the supervisor. Examples of additional work to be performed include but are not limited to snow and ice removal, clean up associated with water or fire damage, and special event support. The incumbent is expected to clean up to 28,000-35,000 square feet of cleanable space per eight hour work day. Reporting directly to one of the Custodial Supervisors (one of four night supervisors, one of three Residential Custodial Supervisors, an Evening Custodial Supervisor, a Day Custodial Supervisor, or a Weekend Custodial Supervisor), additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Clean bathrooms to support University operations as assigned and/or as scheduled.

  • Clean hallways, entranceways, stairways, and elevators, vacuuming and spotting clean carpets and upholstery, freeing carpets of rips and strings, and taping down clean edges as needed.

  • Clean all surfaces and remove water marks and smudges from all surfaces; Clean and dust lamp shades and bulbs, replace burned out light bulbs, empty or sift ash urns, and clean and polish brass fixtures and rails.

  • Clean administrative spaces, laboratories, and classrooms.

  • Dust and wipe venetian blinds, dust and polish furniture, and remove litter from planters and other spaces and items as assigned.

  • Ensure economic use of supplies and materials to conserve University and department resources.

  • Draw and /or requisition supplies, parts, and materials needed, using such items economically to avoid undue costs.

  • Keep supervisor informed of supply and material needs to ensure that adequate inventory is maintained.

  • Suggest improvements in service to improve unit operations, providing supervisors and department management with advice and suggestions regarding work methods, procedures, parts, tools, and related matters for the purpose of improving the effectiveness and cost of service.

  • Oversee key security and related aspects of building security, ensuring security of keys and pagers assigned and maintaining security while in possession of keys and pagers.

  • Return keys, pagers, or other assigned items at end of shift and immediately notifies supervisor of any unaccounted for items.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred

  • One year of custodial work experience is preferred

  • Valid and current driver’s license from Maryland, Virginia, or District of Columbia

  • A basic knowledge of English including the ability to read, write and speak English with understanding in order to read and understand product label instructions and University policies and procedures

  • Must be able to relate custodial and maintenance problems clearly to supervisor and/or the Work Management Center

  • Will be required to complete a training program in building cleaning
