Responsible for the design, development, construction and/or repair, modeling and testing of ships, boats, other marine vessels, offshore structures, and related systems, for both commercial and military applications. May assist or lead teams from a variety of specialties to oversee construction, and performance evaluation during tests and trials at both model and full scale. Applies knowledge from a range of engineering fields to the entire marine systems' design and production processes, including: hydrodynamics, hydrostatics, structures, material science, arrangements, thermodynamics, power generation, fluid systems, and control systems. Duties may include integration of components and subsystem constituents of the total ship or marine system (which might include: propulsion machinery and devices, auxiliary machinery, habitability and outfitting, cargo handling, navigation and communication systems, mission and combat systems).

What You’ll Get to Do:

Mid-Level Mechanical/ Marine Engineer lead design efforts for T-ALTs, Machinery selection, and auxiliary systems design and analysis. May assist the Machinery Systems Engineering Manager (SEM) and be selected in a similar role based on experience. Provide direct support to Navy Ship Design Managers (SDMs) and lead team junior engineers. Support the design, development, and construction of main machinery, ship systems, DPS, propulsion, and other machinery systems, and mission systems interfaces for the MSC and US NAVY ship acquisition programs. Develop preliminary system designs including schematics and Ship Specification to ensure design elements meets Capability Development Document (CDD) and all regulatory body requirements. Travel to perform shipchecks based on ship availability or 3D model review to investigate system/equipment to incorporate into each work package.

More About the Role:

  • Development of marine auxiliary and piping systems, review and analyzing preliminary and functional design documentation and development of ship system specifications.

  • Review and analysis of mechanical and electrical propulsion systems, and auxiliary/ piping systems for technical data packages developed to support design and construction of MSC and NAVY Program Vessels and other specialized Mission Systems.

  • Development of machinery arrangements, weight assessments, propulsion integration and auxiliary systems.

  • Validation of Shipyard Deliverables

  • Ship visits and provide TRANSALT support on various T-SHIP and Navy Projects

  • Ability to perform fluid model analysis

You’ll Bring These Qualifications:

  • Experience in ship machinery systems experience, two of which should include auxiliary system operation, maintenance, and design work for machinery upgrades and/or analyses for commercial, MSC, and/or Navy vessels.

  • Strong ability to read, interpret, and develop mechanical and electrical drawings and technical manuals.

  • Detailed knowledge of U.S. Regulatory Body standards and ability to develop and prepare ship machinery documents for compliance with ABS Rules and other applicable engineering standards.

  • Experience with Military Sealift Command (MSC) marine engineering and/or Navy design practices.

  • Experience or capable of a leadership role on an engineering team

  • Strong writing skills and ability to prepare technical reports and papers

  • Understanding and familiarity with Microsoft Office Software suite

  • BS Mechanical or Marine Engineering degree

  • Ability to obtain a DOD Secret level clearance

These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:

  • Understanding the parameters of various design tools

  • Proficient in AutoCAD 2D and/or 3D

  • Proficient in fluid analysis software (PipeFLO)

  • DOD Secret level clearance

Since this position can be worked in more than one location, the range shown is the national average for the position.

The proposed salary range for this position is:

$57,500-$117,900
