American Airlines is currently seeking a Director of Government Affairs. The position will report to the Managing Director of Global Government Affairs and will be based in Washington, DC. The Government Affairs group is a part of American’s broader Corporate Affairs team and represents the Company before Congress, regulators, and industry stakeholders.

What you'll do

  • Serve as American’s primary liaison to Republican Members of the U.S. House of Representatives

  • Build relationships with relevant members, including members who represent hub states/cities, serve on committees of jurisdiction, and serve in leadership positions

  • Educate policymakers on key Company initiatives and general corporate matters

  • Provide timely analysis to senior Company leaders and Government Affairs colleagues with respect to transportation and aviation-related developments in Washington

  • Help determine with which members senior company leaders should seek to force relationships

  • Prepare senior company leaders for interactions with Republican members of Congress and accompany senior leaders for those interactions, including for Congressional testimony, meetings with members, etc.

  • Create presentations or other articles/briefs for the organization

  • Identify opportunities to leverage the American Airlines brand and to increase awareness of the Company’s contributions to economic development and job creation, as well as its community affairs and philanthropic efforts

  • Serve as an active Ambassador for the AA Political Action Committee

  • Represent the Company at congressional fundraising events (often outside of normal business hours)

  • Participate in industry events on behalf of the Company and play an active role with A4A, the industry’s primary trade association

All you'll need for success

Minimum Qualifications - Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or equivalent experience/training

  • 7+ years of experience on Capitol Hill, in the Executive Branch, or a similar role

  • Demonstrates the highest level of ethics and integrity

Preferred Qualifications - Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Graduate degree preferred

  • Experience with aviation issues is desirable
