JOB SUMMARY: The Engineering Technician V is responsible for the planning, implementation, and performance of advanced electrical, mechanical, audio, and environmental tests of current and new product designs under limited supervision. This person facilitates continuous improvement activities to reduce the potential for product defects. Partners with Engineering and is involved with problem identification, containment activities, action plan creation and execution. The Engineering Technician V ensures that the test requirements for product testing and processes are defined and met.

The Engineering Technician V is a process and technical resource who contributes to process improvements and mentors’ others in achieving their goals. The Engineering Technician V reports to an Engineering Supervisor and/or Manager and requires minimal supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma.

  • 10-15 years of experience in mechanical, electrical and/or electronic conducting testing of products or prototypes.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years of experience in working on multiple projects, contributing to cross functional project teams and mentoring/coaching less experienced staff.

  • Experience with using LabVIEW or NI (national instruments).

  • 5+ years of experience in supporting one or more of the following manufacturing processes: welding, sheet metal, milling, turning, materials specifications, assembly operations.

  • 5+ years of experience supporting quality control processes and standards such as ASQ CQT, ISO 9000, ISO 17025.

  • 5+ years of experience with the laboratory scope of operations, quality concepts, continuous improvement, statistical techniques, and preventative/corrective actions.

  • Current certification in one or more of the following: UL, CSA, ASE, ISO.

  • Work experience testing lithium-Ion cells or battery packs.

  • Strong communication skills and MS Office proficiency.

  • Ability to make and support recommendations to improve testing and lab capabilities.

  • Experience monitoring inventory of an engineering lab and ordering replacements to prevent down time.

  • Ability to author and edit test procedures so they can be repeated with future testing.

  • Must understand electro-mechanical assemblies and be able to troubleshoot them.

  • Must have experience working in an electro-mechanical lab and be aware of the safety requirements while working in this environment.

Essential Duties:

Testing:

  • Setup test equipment and products in proper sequence per testing procedures.

  • Perform tests on prototypes, existing, and competitor products for stated criteria involving mechanical, electrical, environmental, and electromechanical functions through ISO 17025 and Laboratory Scope of Operations.

  • Use various mechanical, electrical, and electronic measurement devices.

  • Accurately interpret and document scientific notation, temperature, pressure, and other measurements.

  • Fabricate and lead assembly of prototype products per drawing specification specifications.

  • Review and validate bill of materials in conjunction with Engineering team.

  • Assist with the Generac Engineering Laboratory Audit and organization 5S programs.

  • Actively participate with fellow Lab team members in daily maintenance of Lab environment and preventive maintenance and calibration of Lab equipment, including identification of equipment needing attention.

  • Collaborate with product Engineers by providing recommendations for development of test plans, test requirements and procedures.

  • Maintain test-related documentation to support administration of a database environment.

  • Analyze test data to prepare formal and informal test reports on complex topics with an emphasis on providing solutions.

  • Responsible for supporting cell and pack testing of batteries for the engineering team.

Clerical:

  • Validate laboratory testing methods and demonstrate testing competence per ISO 17025 and the Laboratory Scope of Operations.

  • Update and develop policies and procedures supporting the continuous improvement of the Engineering Lab.

  • Recommend laboratory test equipment and facility requirements.

  • Assist in planning, assembly, and implementation of test equipment.

  • Mentor and train developing technicians and cross functional engineers

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Subject matter expert in mechanical, electrical and/or electronic measurement devices as well as general techniques and theories around measurement such as SOMAT, EDAQ, NI and CHASSIS.

  • Ability to modify and devise test scripts in high-level scripting languages & the ability to program test equipment with minimal direction from engineering team members.

  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical and electronic drawings, schematics, techniques and theories

  • Able to work non-standard or extended work hours when necessary.

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Excel and Word.

  • Demonstrate strong initiative and self-motivation.

  • Work effectively in a fast-pace, team environment with changing and dueling priorities.

  • Communicate effectively though written and oral means.​

L evel of Independence : Works independently with limited supervision to perform routine and non-routine assignments. The non-routine assignments include advanced testing with technical direction from engineering staff and creating procedures to solve complex problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS : While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand. The employee frequently is required to use hands to manipulate objects, tools or controls; and talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to walk; stoop; crouch; bend and reach above shoulders. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted and up to 100 pounds with assistance, waist high, up to 10 feet away. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be working in the typical conditions of a manufacturing environment including seasonal variation in temperatures and occasional exposure to manufacturing fumes or by-products. The employee must comply with the assigned location PPE requirements including but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, appropriate gloves, clothing and shields for required tasks and closed toed or safety shoes as required by facility safety policies.

Physical Demands : While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision and ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel.
