Generac Power Systems Staff Systems Engineer - Home Standby Installation in Waukesha, Wisconsin

The Staff Systems Engineer-Home Standby Installation will lead the engineering integration and core engineering teams through the development process in defining system interactions and requirements. Core responsibilities include identification of relevant system hardware and software components and evaluating inputs/outputs for sufficient performance of design related to the installation of Generac’s Residential Home Standby products. The Staff Systems Engineer follows the NPI process from the concept stage in developing design requirements by assessing architecture and system design options through product launch in defining verification and validation test procedures. This role specifically supports Generac’s Residential Home Standby business with a focus on delivering design innovations and process solutions that increase installation efficiency to reduce total cost of ownership for our customers.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related discipline

  • 7+ years of relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with systems engineering and/or requirements management in a product development environment (e.g. V-model)

  • 7+ years of systems integration experience in a consumer products R&D environment preferably within power generation or outdoor power equipment

  • Experience in the development of stationary appliances and consumer products that require professional installation

  • Experience in the design layout and packaging of electromechanical components and systems preferably in stationary appliances and consumer products that require professional installation

  • Experience in microprocessor hardware interfacing techniques (e.g., IIC, SPIbus, EEprom, etc.)

  • Self-starter, energizing, results oriented, and able to multi-task

  • Ability to perform detail-oriented work with a high degree of accuracy on multiple projects of increasing complexity

  • Experience in new product design and development

  • Active participant in technical communities tied to industry standards or regulations

  • Ability to translate technical information to all audiences

  • Applies engineering knowledge and experience to improve products, services and processes

  • Master’s in a STEM major (Physics, Technology, Engineering and Math)

  • Strong written communication and presentation skill

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Capture customer installation needs and system level requirements by collaborating with Core Engineering, Business Partners, Service Operations and Product Managers as required

  • Assess and document requirements for technical innovations and procedures that drive a reduction in installation time and cost for the customer

  • Travel as needed to customer sites to value map the installation and commissioning process towards assessing and identifying opportunities to streamline the install process

  • Manage product and system requirements, specifications and flow down. Drive validation and verification activities including sub-component and full system testing

  • Work across engineering functions in defining systems strategy and coordinating technical reviews. Engage in technical discussions; participate in technical designs and present technical ideas

  • Define systems test strategy and perform hands on product integration activities

  • Create and maintain Statements of Requirements (SOR), block diagrams and systems inputs/outputs

  • Support product development plans (schedule, product cost, meeting design inputs)

  • Interface with internal company personnel and provide technical support for assigned projects

  • Create, design, and develop test specifications for new systems and firmware/software

  • Occasional travel to other Generac facilities and customer sites

  • Proactively train, coach, and mentor less experienced Engineers

  • Specifies precise new product functional requirements; designs, tests and integrates a variety of increasingly complex components to produce final designs; and evaluates the design's overall effectiveness, cost (including cost/benefit analysis), reliability (risk analysis), and safety

  • Designs, develops, executes and evaluates fitness-for-use testing, product specifications and process validation plans for a variety of increasingly complex products and/or components; creates and reviews material part specifications and bills of materials

  • Supporting product development plans (schedule, product cost, meeting design inputs)

  • Acts as a resource to mentor and teach less experienced engineers.

  • Other duties as assigned

The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting, close vision and ability to adjust focus. Occasional travel.
