Job Title:CUSTODIAN

Reports to:Building and Grounds Supervisor

May occasionally take direction from Building Administration.

Status: Hourly FLSA Status:Non-Exempt

BASIC FUNCTION: The Custodian is responsible for the overall cleanliness, sanitation, security, safety, and maintenance of the assigned building, including the grounds and equipment.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Must be 18 years of age

  • Preferred: Experience in general cleaning, chemical handling, customer service, and school custodial work

  • Knowledge of basic techniques of custodial maintenance required

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, or CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Willingness to take required yearly trainings provided by the district

  • Willingness to obtain a bus driver license, preferred but not required

TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES:

  • Basic problem-solving skills

  • Ability to acquire skills to operate various cleaning equipment

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changes without notice

  • Effective communication and cooperation with diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds

  • Ability to follow directions courteously and helpfully

  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies and building/department procedures

  • Awareness and practice of workplace safety, including reporting unsafe conditions

JOB GOAL:

  • Maintain school buildings in a state of cleanliness that supports the educational program without interruption

  • Provide exemplary custodial services ensuring all work meets standards

  • Demonstrate positive attitude, loyalty, cooperation, teamwork, attendance, and safety

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Cleaning and Maintenance:

  • Clean and preserve designated spaces and equipment to meet health standards.

  • Clean rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and draperies using vacuum cleaners and shampooers.

  • Sweep, scrub, wax, and polish floors using brooms, mops, and powered scrubbers.

  • Dust and polish furniture and equipment.

  • Wash windows, walls, ceilings, and woodwork, waxing and polishing as necessary.

  • Empty wastebaskets and transport trash to disposal areas.

  • Move and arrange furniture as required.

  • Perform minor adjustments and repairs to mechanical equipment as needed.

  • Restock disposable items and maintain inventory records.

  • Request supplies and equipment as needed for cleaning tasks.

    Grounds and Seasonal Work:

  • Remove debris from driveways, garages, and bus loading areas.

  • Maintain grounds, including grass cutting and tree trimming.

  • Perform seasonal grounds work, including snow removal.

  • Operate a snow blower and tractor or shovel snow for up to 1 hour during winter months.

    Event and Facility Setup:

  • Set up and take down lunch tables daily and chairs for special events.

  • Move portable metal bleachers between sports fields, if applicable.

  • Position and remove portable stop signs at intersections daily.

  • Raise and lower American and Iowa flags at the beginning and end of the day.

    Safety and Inspections:

  • Inspect boilers and take water samples daily during the operating season.

  • Follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, and utilize appropriate safety equipment.

  • Report unsafe conditions to the appropriate supervisor/administrator.

  • Make recommendations for improved service and efficient operations.

  • Examine buildings and report needs for repairs of failed equipment.

    Communication and Public Relations:

  • Assist the public utilizing facilities by providing directions and setting up equipment.

  • Maintain good public relations with students, parents, faculty, and the community. Focus on Work-Related conversations. respect privacy and promote a positive culture.

Miscellaneous:

  • Sort and clean clothing and other articles; load washing machines and fold dried items.

  • Replace light bulbs.

  • Keep equipment and work area clean and neat.

  • Follow the chain of command as required.

  • Fill in for other shift custodial absences as required by administration.

  • Work in all types of weather conditions.

  • Be available to work weekends as needed.

  • Report to work during emergencies.

  • Manage time efficiently.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

CLOTHING/PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:

  • Safety glasses, rubber-toed shoes/boots (no open toes), street clothes.

  • Outdoor clothing including coats, boots, gloves, and hat dependent on outside environmental conditions.

  • Rubber gloves, boots, face shield, aprons, and respirators provided based on job duties.

EQUIPMENT/TOOLS:

  • Brooms, mops, rugs, buckets, garbage liners and cans, cleaning chemicals, buffers, auto scrubbers, commercial mowers, push mowers, trimmers, shovels, 2-wheeled carts, dollies, salt spreaders, snow blowers, hoses, hand broom, dustpan, ladders, and extendable ladder.

EVALUATION:

  • Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with board policy.

  • Evaluation is the responsibility of the buildings and grounds director or designee.
