Description

We are seeking an Accountant in the life insurance industry to join our client's team in Des Moines, Iowa. The successful candidate will work within our Financial Reporting team in the Corporate Accounting Division, preparing and analyzing internal and external financial statements and related analytical reports. The role also involves utilizing technology to drive projects in support of team objectives.

Responsibilities

• Apply extensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), with an emphasis on insurance-based concepts, to research and resolve various accounting and reporting issues.

• Account for timely and accurate completion of components of the monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and footnotes.

• Prepare, analyze and/or review settlement schedules and journal entries for reinsurance treaties.

• Reconcile account balances to supporting documentation and review other account reconciliations done by the team.

• Produce various analytical reports, research items or trends that are unusual and communicate findings to leadership.

• Coordinate with and support external auditors and regulatory examiners in areas of responsibility applicable to the external audits and exams.

• Apply knowledge of the entities, business units, chart of accounts, profit centers, hierarchies, processes, and controls to effectively implement changes in the organization that impact Financial Reporting.

• Apply knowledge of technology platforms or new technology to effectively implement changes in the organization that impact Financial Reporting.

• Communicate professionally, collaboratively, and effectively with areas inside and outside of Corporate Accounting to identify and implement projects that impact Financial Reporting.

• Support the Financial Reporting team in special assignments and projects as necessary to meet departmental goals.

• Maintain written procedural documentation for all assigned tasks and adhere to written processes and procedures in support of the required internal controls.

Requirements • Proficiency in creating and analysing complex financial models

• Demonstrable knowledge and experience in life insurance industry

• Solid understanding of corporate accounting principles, procedures and legislation

• Proven experience in financial reporting, including preparation, analysis and auditing

• Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail

• Proficiency in the use of accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field

• Professional accounting certification, such as CPA, is a plus.
