Summary The Supervisory Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist is responsible for the hospital-wide Healthcare Technology Management (Clinical Engineering) Program serving all Services throughout the Healthcare System, its state of the art, modern outpatient clinics, and Home-Based Health Care and Research. Serves as a consultant to the Chief, Healthcare Technology Management and is administratively under the Chief, Healthcare Technology Management.at VA Connecticut Health Care System, West Haven CT Responsibilities GS-13 Duties includes but or not limited to: Responsibility for an equipment management program that meets current JCAHO and NFPA requirements. The breadth of technology is typical of a tertiary care and university-affiliated institution. Supervises Biomedical Engineers and Biomedical Equipment Support Specialists on the Networking Team. Instructs physicians, clinicians and other equipment operators in correct equipment application and in operator-level maintenance of networked medical equipment. This includes a curriculum that addresses the safe and effective use of medical equipment and/or technology at both the formal/informal levels. Manages the Maintenance program and Networked Medical Device Database (NMDD) for networked medical devices, including medical device incident investigations to assure compliance with patient safety goals, SMDA, and JCAHO requirements. Serves as advisor to senior clinical and leadership staff on medical engineering technology (including existing and emerging technology) addressing viability, long-term suitability, compatibility, and/or safety. Conducts capital asset and infrastructure planning for medical equipment spanning initial concept, installation, and effective implementation of complex medical equipment. Serves as institutional expert who directly supports the most complex and specialized networked clinical technology including service, system administration, training, and quality assurance. OR Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology or in a related field such as Electronics Engineering Technology (EET) or Information Technology. OR Completion of a military training program in biomedical equipment and two years of experience as a Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist or Biomedical Equipment Technician, Field Service Engineer, Medical Equipment Repairer or Information Technology Specialist. Grade Determinations: Supervisory Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist, GS-13 (1) Experience: At least one year of experience at the GS-12 grade level that demonstrates the technical competencies described at that level. (2) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to meeting the KSAs at the GS-12 grade level, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): (a) Ability to work independently to set priorities, delegate tasks, meet multiple deadlines, analyze organizational problems, and develop and implement effective solutions to optimize quality, efficiency, performance, and productivity within the service. (b) Ability to develop policy; manage medical equipment life-cycle processes; and provide workload analysis in Healthcare Technology Management operations. (c) Ability to translate management goals and objectives into well-coordinated and controlled biomedical work operations. *(d) Ability to perform the full range of supervisory duties which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed; assessments of competency; evaluation of performance; selection of staff; and recommendation of awards, advancements, and when appropriate, disciplinary actions. Work at the bench, sitting is often tedious and precise, requiring good concentration with proper hand-eye coordination. Some climbing and working from ladders may be required.
