West Haven City Public Works Crew Leader in WEST HAVEN, Utah

Job Summary

Performs various advanced-level skilled duties related to constructing, installing, maintaining, and repairing city streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and other public works service systems.  Participates in maintaining buildings and other city infrastructure.

 

Supervision

Received:            This position is under the direct supervision of the Public Works Supervisor and the general supervision of the Public Works Director.

Exercised:           Provides close to general supervision to Maintenance Workers I & II while training or on a project-by-project basis.  May also provide oversight supervision to part-time, seasonal, and temporary employees.

 

Essential Functions

·         Receives project assignments and completion schedules.

·         Takes assigned equipment, materials, and co-workers to the site and completes the project.

·         Operates specialized heavy equipment such as single & tandem-axle dump trucks, road graders, front-end loaders, backhoes, bucket trucks, snowplows, sanders, and other similar equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of various street department projects and sites.

·         Performs cement work on flat surfaces, curbs, and gutter.

·         Grouts surfaces and joints; participates in work zone safety procedures.

·         Flags on coming vehicles.

·         Transports and deposits various construction materials such as sand, salt, gravel, dirt, and bitumen.

·         Performs hot mix patching, storm drain cleaning, repair and construction, snow and ice control, gravel street maintenance, cold mix patching, and debris collection.

·         Participates in work site safety procedures.

·         Set up barricades, safety signs, and signal equipment.

·         Checks and services assigned equipment.

·         Performs routine maintenance and emergency repairs.

·         Reports mechanical problems to the shop for repair.

·         Performs routine maintenance to ensure safe and efficient vehicle and equipment operations.

·         Follows general preventative maintenance schedules related to fluid levels, air pressures, electrical functions, and hydraulics.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge of:

·         Standard practices, methods, materials, and tools necessary for pipe construction and repair activities.

·         Pipe fitting procedures, pipe classifications, and type.

·         Occupational hazards and safety precautions of trench work construction and pipeline maintenance work.

·         Hazards common to heavy equipment operation.

·         Drain system construction methods, etc.

 

Skilled in:

·         Operating basic manual and power tools.

·         Interpersonal communication skills.

·         Operate heavy equipment of various kinds under varying conditions.

 

Ability to:

·         Make minor repairs on assigned vehicles.

·         Perform heavy physical labor.

·         Develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, elected officials, local agencies, and the general public.

·         Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

·         Work from blueprints

·         Tolerate weather extremes in the work environment.

·         Perform basic mathematical computations in reading and using various meters, gauges, and related devices.

Education & Experience

·         Graduation from high school or GED, plus sufficient training to demonstrate an aptitude and ability to perform above and related duties; AND

·         Two (3) years of general work experience, preferably in a field related to the above duties; OR

·         An equivalent combination of education and experience. 

 

Certifications & Licensures

·         Must possess a valid driver's license

·         Must obtain a valid commercial driver's license (C ass B) with tanker endorsement within the first year of employment.

·         Flagging Certification. 

·         Heavy Equipment Operator Certification

·         OSHA Safety Certification.

·         Public Works Inspector Certifications (CPII).

Physical & Mental Demands

Tasks require a variety of physical activities periodically involving muscular strain related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, pulling, and reaching.  Essential functions require talking, hearing, and seeing.  Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity are required to perform essential functions. Daily local travel is necessary for job performance---ongoing exposure to changing weather conditions.

 

Must be able to lift 20-50 pounds continually, frequently lift/carry up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift/carry more than 100 pounds.  Crouching/kneeling, balancing, and bending/twisting may occur usually when performing essential duties.

 

Mental application utilizes memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, and creative problem-solving.

 

Special Requirements

·         A six-month introductory period is a prerequisite to this position.

·         Must have a valid Utah driver's license.

·         Satisfactory outcome of a pre-employment and ongoing drug screening is required.

·         Satisfactory outcome of a pre-employment physical is required.

·         Satisfactory outcome of a pre-employment criminal background check is required.

·         Irregular work schedules may require extended hours, including evenings and weekends.

·         Work "on-call" and stand by 24 hours a day and be able to respond to city calls within 30 minutes of a call.
