Summary

The Real-Time Energy Market Trader I will play a critical role in optimizing the New York Power Authority's (NYPA) diverse generation portfolio in the NYISO real-time market. This position involves the development of bidding strategies for energy and ancillary services for NYPA’s generation assets, including fossil fuel and hydropower facilities, to optimize revenue while ensuring compliance with market rules and operational requirements. Key responsibilities include purchasing and managing natural gas and fuel oil supplies for NYPA’s fossil fuel plants, optimizing hydro reservoir storage, and responding to market conditions and trends. The trader will assess resource availability, market pricing and implement strategies to ensure efficient, cost-effective operation.

The successful candidate will coordinate closely with internal stakeholders, including System Operators, Fuel Supply, and Plant Operations teams, as well as external entities such as the NYISO, to ensure reliable unit availability and alignment during planned or unplanned outages. This role requires working 12-hour shifts (including nights/weekends/holidays), exceptional decision-making skills, strong communication abilities, and a deep understanding of energy markets and fuel management. As a member of NYPA's trading team, the Real-Time Energy Market Trader will contribute to advancing the authority’s mission of delivering affordable, clean, and reliable energy to New Yorkers.#LI-VB-1

Responsibilities

  • Execute daily functions required by NYISO as an LSE, Power Supplier, Transmission Customer & Market Participant

  • Develop, monitor, adjust bids/schedules and forecasts to ensure adherence to strategy, fuel management constraints, contractual obligations & appropriate governance

  • Review and analyze market conditions to develop & submit bids for all NYPA assets/portfolios on hourly/daily/forward basis

  • Manage NYPA trading tools as appropriate to reduce NYPA exposure to market volatility

  • Stay current with NYISO procedures, market issues and reports.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Familiar with Wholesale Electricity Market, Fuel Markets and/or associated Financial products.

  • Basic business, statistical, financial, analytical and reasoning skills

  • Strong analytical and communication skills

  • Able to adapt, multitask and work under pressure

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience in an analytical role or equivalent combinations of education & experience.

  • Utility or Energy Company experience preferred

Physical Requirements

Real Time Traders, ability to work a 24/7 12-hour rotation, holidays and weekends.

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is GFE: $110,620.00 - $152,090.00. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
