General Statement of Duties
Performs routine unskilled and semi-skilled manual work in the custodial care of buildings .
Distinguishing Features of the Class
Employeesin this class perform manual labor involving a variety of buildingscustodial and maintenance tasks. Work involves the use of a variety oftools and light equipment. Work includes cleaning floors, windows,bathrooms, replacing simple light bulbs and paper supplies, buildingsecurity and routine grounds maintenance. The employees are subject toworking in both inside and outside environments and exposure to varioushazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts,electrical current, chemicals and human body fluids and thus is subjectto OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed underregular supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspectionto determine thoroughness in carrying out assigned duties.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
Cleansbuildings; vacuums, mops, sweeps, dusts furniture, cleans restrooms andrestroom fixtures; cleans windows, shampoos carpet, buffs and waxesfloors, strips wax.
Stocks restrooms with paper products such as towels and tissue; stocks soap.
Cleans window blinds and window sills; cleans base boards.
Replaces light bulbs.
Performsa variety of maintenance tasks such as sweeping sidewalks, parking lotsand porches; locks and unlocks buildings, sets up rooms for meetingsand moves furniture; and hauling off trash.
Defrosts refrigerators; cleans windows and walls; cleans coffee pots; washes out trash containers; cleans dishes.
Operates carpet cleaners, buffers, dusters, rakes, vacuum machines and other cleaning equipment.
Operates and cleans county vehicles.
Raises and lowers flags.
Maintains ready stock of janitorial supplies.
Maintains simple records of work activities.
Additional Job Duties
May supervise community service workers.
Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of the methods and techniques applied in unskilled manual labor and custodial work.
Working knowledge of the standard practices, material, tools, and equipment utilized in the cleaning of buildings.
Working knowledge of standard hand tools, operation of light equipment, and materials used in assigned work.

Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work.
Ability to work productively without close supervision.
Ability to respond courteously to County employees and citizens.
Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors and coworkers.
Ability to keep simple work records.
Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
Physical Requirements
Mustbe able to physically perform the basic life operational functions ofclimbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching,standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearingand repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform medium workexerting up to 50 pound of force occasionally; 20 pounds of forcefrequently; and 10 pounds constantly.
Must possess the visual acuity to operate light equipment such as the vacuum cleaners and small trucks in a safe manner.
Desirable Education and Experience
Abilityto read and write and any combination of education and experience thatproduces the required knowledges, skills, and abilities listed above.
Special Requirement
May require possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
