What you'll be doing: As one of our phenomenalSpecial Education Teachersat ourSchool Age (Cheektowaga, NY)program, you will be:

  • Assessing & prescribing appropriate education & behavioral objectives for each child

  • With other teaching specialists, assess & monitor individual social & personal needs of children to assure that each child is receiving all necessary services

  • Participating w/ team members in assuring continuity between educational & home environments

  • Supervising teacher assistants in implementing individual objectives

    What we need from you:

    Bachelor's degree (in special education required) AND

    Permanent, Professional or Provisional/Initial New York State Certification in Special Education

Position Summary:

Plans and implements instructional program for each child assigned to him/her. Communicates regularly with parents and other team members concerning each child's needs.

Reporting Relationship:

Receives general supervision from the Assistant Principal. Gives direct supervision to Teacher Assistant(s), Aide(s), Substitute Teacher Assistants/Aide(s) and volunteer(s).

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement Individualized Educational Program.

  • Assess and prescribe appropriate educational and behavioral objectives for each child.

  • Evaluate results of educational programs and reassess children's needs.

  • Provide supportive and consistent learning experiences for children.

  • With other teaching specialists, assess and monitor individual social and personal needs of children to assure that each child is receiving all necessary services. Participate with Team members in assuring continuity between the educational and home environments.

  • Immediately report all accidents/incidents to appropriate staff members and complete all required paperwork.

  • Assist students while in the water during swimming programs.

  • Initiate, schedule and conduct IEP conferences as appropriate.

  • Upon request of supervisor attend CPSE/CSE meetings.

  • Maintain confidentiality of information and records in accordance with legal requirements and agency policy and procedures.

  • Consultation and Supervision

  • Supervise teacher aides and assistants in implementing individual objectives.

  • Supervise volunteers in implementing individual objectives.

  • Participate in staff, parent, and ad hoc committee meetings for the purpose of assuring maximum educational opportunities for children.

  • Participate in in-service training activities.

  • Utilize agency Employee Handbook and department program handbook.

  • Assist and supervise student teachers and interns.

  • Equipment Management

  • Submit an annual inventory of supplies and equipment to Assistant Principal (s).

  • Project future need of supplies and equipment in a timely manner.

  • Recommend purchases to the Assistant Principal.

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

Master's Degree in Special Education PLUS a Permanent/Professional New York State Certification in Special EducationORa Provisional/Initial New York State Certification in Special Education. Master's Degree level teachers are expected to perform in the above mentioned responsibilities with greater independence and efficiency than that of a Bachelor's Degree level teacher.

Bachelor's Degree in Special Education PLUS a Permanent/Professional New York State Certification in Special EducationORa Provisional/Initial New York State Certification in Special Education

Must have thorough knowledge of principles and practices of curriculum development for children with developmental disabilities. Ability to plan, implement and document individualized educational programming. Demonstrate understanding and application of behavior management techniques. Ability to supervise other staff members.

Sensitivity and respect for children with developmental disabilities and their families at all times. Ability to work cooperatively with others. Willingness to accept and perform duties and responsibilities not ordinarily associated with the position in cases of emergency or when unusual or unpredictable circumstances arise. Willingness to grow and further develop personal and professional performance. Willingness to attend specific training as may be required by the position and/or recommended by supervisor. Demonstrated skill in formulating and documenting appropriate behavioral objectives for children with children with exceptional needs.

  • Mental Requirements:

The ability to read; write in a legible, grammatically correct manner; analyze, memorize, be perceptive/comprehensive, show good judgement, have good math skills, spatial aptitude, sequencing & decision making skills, independent action, planning & prioritizing and follow directions and understand and follow detailed written and oral instructions. The ability to maintain auditory and visual supervision of students.

  • Human Relations Skills:

The ability to communicate with individuals in a positive and professional manner, demonstrate the ability to be a leader/supervisor and serve as an appropriate role model to staff members. Work independently as well as cooperatively with others. Be approachable, enthusiastic, personable, work under pressure and meet job-related deadlines accordingly. Receive supervision instruction in a positive manner. Adhere to and administer Agency's policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times. Ability to handle information discretely understanding strict rules of confidentiality.

  • Equipment Operation:

The ability to operate normal household appliances; ability to operate office equipment, such as, computer, copier, fax machine, etc.
