Certified Ophthalmic Assistant I

The Institute includes more than 140 staff physicians and researchers who diagnose, treat, and investigate all conditions of the eye, including macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.

As a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, you will perform basic patient care, ophthalmic testing procedures, and initial patient examinations as directed by a physician or supervisor.

A caregiver in this position works 8:00AM - 4:30PM.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Perform clinical and technical ophthalmic duties and perform basic patient care as directed by a physician or supervisor.

  • Receive and prepare patients for examination and treatment under the direction of a supervisor or physician.

  • Perform routine screening tests and document patient information in the patient medical record.

  • Stock and maintain exam rooms with equipment and supplies.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Successful completion of the written exam for Certified Ophthalmic Assistant.

  • Recent graduate of an Ophthalmic Technology Program (not yet COT certified).

  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).

  • One year of experience providing direct patient care under the supervision of an Ophthalmologist.

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity to operate office equipment and PC.

  • Ability to lift and transport up to 25 pounds.

  • May require extended periods of standing, walking or sitting.

  • Visual acuity, including the ability to distinguish colors.
