Process Control Systems Specialist

Job Summary:

The Marathon Los Angeles Refinery, located in Wilmington, California, has an opening for Process Controls System Specialist who will provide process control systems support in the refinery. The Process Control Specialist will be assigned to support unit(s) and will be expected to aid as needed to other units where an individual’s knowledge and experience is applicable. Primary resource for hardware and software maintenance. The available schedules for the position are 9/80, 5/40 or 4/1, after hours calls are required typically only once or twice a month and support TAR once a year. This is a non-exempt role and eligible for over-time. (Core hours Start time - 5 AM-7 AM - end time 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM.)

Key Responsibilities:

Day to Day Activities

  • Ensure reliability and function of Process Control systems and applications. Confirming that data and work processes are kept up to date such that applications/hardware are running as intended.

  • Collaborates with partners and customers to communicate, schedule, and execute updates.

  • Documents, communicates, and works through issues, changes, notices, and impacts to customers.

Hardware and Software Maintenance

  • Monitor Control Systems performance, address system alarms

  • Replace and maintain Control System hardware, execute preventative maintenance

  • Coordinate vendor work, manage MOCs, and perform software upgrades

  • Maintain spare parts inventory and Control System failure metrics

  • Inspect Process Control cabling, handle system configurations

  • Support hardware refresh projects and software updates

  • Troubleshoot device issues, manage PLC inventory

Process Control Management

  • Assist with new control loop implementation, troubleshoot existing loops

  • Update Control System data historian, assist with PLC/SIS programming

  • Participate in incident investigations

Small and Large CAPEX Project Roles

  • Participate in testing and implementation of hardware/software changes

Application Support

  • Provide technical support, streamline data handling, and monitor application performance

  • Coordinate with vendors on updates and communicate changes

  • Maintain and troubleshoot Control System data historians

Education, Experience and Skills

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED degree and 5 years of process controls experience OR an Associates Degree in Electrical, Instrumentation, Computing, Chemical or Technology and 3 year of process controls experience OR Bachelors Degree in Electrical, Instrumentation, Chemical, Computing or Electrical Engineering Technology and 1 year of process control experience. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)

  • Must have experience with DCS or PLC maintenance.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical. Physical ability to inspect equipment using stairs/ladders.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.)

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

  • Travel Requirement is 5 %.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with DCS: Experion, TPS/TDC, GE Mark VIe is preferred.

  • Experience with PLC Maintenance, Logic, Troubleshooting: Allen Bradley, Modicon is preferred.

  • Experience with SIS Maintenance: Safety Manager, Triconex is preferred.

  • Experience with Honeywell Dynamo Suite, Hexagon Integrity, AspenTech DMC, Aveva PI is preferred.

  • Experience with SQL (SSMS, SSRS, SSIS), Data Analysis Scripting (Python, SQL, VBA) is preferred.

  • Basic Networking is preferred.

  • Experience with Industrial Protocols (ModBus, OPC, OPCUA) is preferred.
