What is it that we do at Colonial Pipeline Company?

Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day. Colonial transports various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, and fuels for the U.S. military through a pipeline system. Colonial transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast, providing refined products to more than 50 million Americans.

About the Environmental Specialist Position

As an Environmental Specialist, you will provide environmental support to Corporate, District and Local operating area teams. In this role you will manage and provide technical expertise in areas of air, water, and waste with focus on regulatory and compliance programs, environmental site assessments, remediation projects, and emergency response and preparedness. The Environmental Specialist fills a critical role within the Planning Section and Environmental Unit of the Local, District, and Corporate Emergency Response teams.

What You Get to Do:

  • Manage all air, water, and waste compliance programs in local area of responsibility.

  • Manage environmental permit acquisition and compliance monitoring for all facilities and projects in local area of responsibility.

  • Manage local site assessments and remediation projects. Includes the involvement of annual project budgets and oversight of consultants and contractors.

  • Direct and manage response and clean-up efforts for all releases in area of responsibility not managed by the District or Corporate Incident Management Teams.

  • Work with the Environmental Management Information System housed in Enablon to properly document and manage program processes and records.

  • Fulfill a designated ICS role during emergency response and mobilize to Incident Command Post or Area of Operations, to participate in emergency response efforts for a 7 -10-day period.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field of study from an accredited college or university; may consider a combination of experience and/or education.

  • Ideally, 7+ years of experience in Environmental permitting, assessment, consulting, compliance, and remediation practices.

  • Practicable experience with state specific air regulations under the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) and Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE).

  • Working knowledge of VDEQ and MDE regulations for remediation, spill response, NPDES compliance, and waste handling.

  • Valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record to drive company and personal vehicles to perform required tasks.

  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time.

  • Successful completion of ICS Introductory Training (e.g., ICS 100, 200, 700, etc.).

  • Solid understanding of contaminant characteristics and transport mechanisms.

  • Knowledgeable in environmental regulations applicable to pipeline industry including releases, air, water, waste, etc.

  • Experience with state specific rules and regulations for permitting, compliance, remediation, spill response and waste handling.

  • Pipeline or other oil and gas industry experience.

  • Certifications/Licensures: Up-to-date OSHA HAZWOPER Certification, TWIC card, and/or First Aid and CPR Training.

  • Working knowledge of environmental laws and regulations to determine applicability to Colonial Pipeline Company.

Physical Requirements & Work Conditions:

Visual acuity to read and prepare reports and documentation. Normal color recognition and identification. Ability to communicate to understand instructions, convey information and receive information. Digital dexterity for operation of smartphone, PC keyboard and mouse. Physical ability to respond to emergency situations. Work is performed in a typical office environment, outdoors within facilities and on the pipeline ROW. May be required to work in outdoor/field environment which may include inclement weather and hazardous environments to assess protocols and examine procedures or respond to incidents.

This is a Department of Transportation (DOT) covered job and is subject to all applicable regulatory requirements such as testing for the presence of prohibited drugs and alcohol as defined under 49 CFR Part 199 as a condition of employment, to include pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable cause/suspicion and fit for duty testing.
