POSITION PURPOSE
The R&D Manager, Packaging and Sustainability will focus on advancing PDI’s strategic objectives to deliver innovative and sustainable product to our customers. This will include leading a high performing team of engineers and developing packaging and sustainability roadmaps.

Responsibilities include leading the design, development and execution of packaging R&D programs and the execution of our R&D sustainability goals. It includes providing leadership to direct reports and cross functional team members to ensure product development programs are executed timely, compliant and meet the high standards aligned with PDI’s mission. The position will also assist in the implementation of an organizational structure that supports successful delivery of innovation.
Acts as subject matter expert for packaging and ensure technical and business requirements are managed and met.
Provides input to program strategies, budgets, timelines, and project/product development plans.
Build cross-functional relationships to integrate R&D environmental sustainability initiatives into business practices; manage R&D related data and support reporting requirements.
Leadership and Management
Reinforces PDI’s culture and values, and drives change where needed to increase alignment with those goals.
Identifies departmental needs and assist with recruits/hires/promotes personnel as appropriate.
Develops staff through coaching, training, and other relevant experiences. Builds high performance teams.
Guides the reallocation of roles and responsibilities across team members to facilitate both goal achievement and personal development.
Project Management
Operates effectively in a multi-tasking, cross-functional environment, including managing network external collaborators and experts.
Analyzes and provides clear direction in areas of ambiguity or uncertainty, maintaining momentum and achieving alignment with cross-functional partners in these areas.
Demonstrates intellectual agility to work effectively and efficiently in the ever-evolving sustainability space, exhibiting the ability to identify and assess opportunities for prudent risk taking.
Develops appropriately proactive resource plans and utilizes staff and other resources effectively to meet area/partners’ needs. Uses appropriate tools to regularly review, measure, modify, and adjust plans and to monitor the efficiency, effectiveness and balance of resources according to evolving business needs and environment.
PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

Support, recruit, develop and retain an effective team, act as a model for the R&D organization
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Packaging Design or Engineering with a focus in Packaging materials and sustainability or equivalent experience
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of MS Office, TOPS or Cape, SolidWorks or Creo, AutoCAD, Adobe, and Minitab is preferred.
Technical knowledge of regulated products and packaging; FDA or EPA Regulated Environment
Familiar with laws and regulations on sustainability
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
7+ years of relevant experience in packaging development and R&D support, with a demonstrated track record of successful product launches and scientific responsibilities
Previous experience in wipes packaging advantageous
SKILLS/ABILITIES
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Capable of influencing opinion and sharing technical information and best practices through effective presentations to internal and external audiences
Excellent Project Management skills
Expert knowledge and strong experience in packaging as well as product development and life-cycle management
Experience in leading a team of engineers of various experiences
WORKING CONDITIONS
- About 20% Lab and 80% office environment
SALARY RANGE
- $120,000 - $140,000
