Vascular Access – Built on a history of innovation, our Arrow® brand of technically advanced vascular access devices are renowned throughout the world. Many of our vascular access products have antimicrobial and antithrombogenic protection designed to reduce vascular-related complications and include long and short dwell central venous catheters (CVC), sheath introducers, arterial lines, peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC), as well as specialty devicesand an advanced vascular positioning system to facilitate precise placement of a PICC or CVC near the heart. Position Summary
Utilize solid engineering principles to support the Design Engineering team in the creation of technical product designs – including mechanical, functional, and technology disciplines as needed to support the Vascular Access portfolio.
o Groups design inputs into logical groupings and produces product designs to ensure that all design needs are met.
o Utilize design experimentation, simulation tools and technology expertise to evaluate critical aspects of product design and provide technical guidance on specification development in alignment with project execution timelines.
o Where appropriate, delivering highly functional detailed designs for features, components, and assemblies that meet our customer requirements and performance specifications.
Principal Responsibilities
PEOPLE
• Manages, mentors and trains technical personnel (engineers, designers, technicians, etc.) to meet expectations of their job descriptions and to develop them technically and professionally; manages leveling of employees across job levels; actively supports employees in, and provides opportunities for, career path development.
• Ensures the content, thoroughness and quality of the work generated by the department.
• Maintains open communication with employees to ensure understanding of their needs.
• Manages resource utilization of team to meet project requirements.
• Sets goals and objectives for team and employees, provides direct feedback and appraisals.
• Ensure company policies and procedures are followed, taking timely corrective action with the help of HR when necessary.
WORK OUTPUT
• Provides technical expertise in the areas of mechanical, functional and technological characteristics of the product specifications.
• Leads the investigation of tools, test methods and evaluation tools for the development of robust design to meet critical design inputs.
• Supports the creation of technical documentation describing the understanding of Design Inputs to Design Outputs including the creation of Essential Design Outputs.
• Provides technical input required of the C2C process to support design decisions.
• Creates design control documentation associated with the design, development, test and verification activities required by quality system requirements.
• Provides independent review for design reviews associated with technical activities including drawings/schematics, validation/capability testing, new and revised operating procedures, etc.
• Actively promotes consistent improvement of engineering processes.
• Provides reports and presentations to management as required.
• Provides written documentation regarding unusual problems and solutions.
• Manages the creation, documentation and processing of patents sourced from the department in alignment with strategic plans, product roadmaps, and technology roadmaps.
PROCESSES
• Participates in Document Change Order approval process.
• Assures that projects are conducted according to corporate guidelines and Quality Management System requirements; improves, or leads others in the improvement of, Quality Management System processes.
• Ensures that technical employees work within appropriate development processes.
• Responsible for maintaining compliance to industry standards.
TECHNOLOGY
• Actively promotes the development, integration, and acquisition of new technologies and processes in alignment with strategic plans established by executive leadership.
• Promotes design and/or selection of equipment to reduce costs and improve quality.
• May select and work with vendors.
Education / Experience Requirements
• Bachelors Degree required in an applicable field, graduate degree preferred.
• Specific demonstrated technical expertise in mechanical, functional and/or technology disciplines.
• 10+ years of relevant experience required.
• Previous managerial experience leading multiple teams required.
• Strong experience in the design of injection molded components and material selection for use in medical devices.
Specialized Skills / Other Requirements
• Ability to engage effectively in a matrix environment, with ownership and accountability to project timelines.
• Proficiency in simulation tools including finite element analysis, design of experiments etc.
• Strong working knowldedge of processes and equipment common to medical device manufacturing; examples include additive manufacturing, machining, extrusion, injection molding, coating, adhesive and thermal bonding, etc.
• Experience with and working knowledge of ISO9000, FDA and GMP requirements.
