Overview:

There is one Extra Help Engineering Technician I opening with the Yakima County Public Services, Water Resources Division. This position is responsible for collecting field data, creating and maintaining databases and geographic files using GIS (Geographic Information System), GPS software/hardware, and Excel, water sampling, construction site field documentation, inspecting stormwater BMPs, and other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:

Essential Duties:

Collecting stormwater field data with GPS hardware and software, creating and maintaining data spreadsheets or databases, creating reports based on those data.

 

Collecting water samples at stormwater outfalls. Maintaining logs and chains of custody for each sample taken. Delivering those samples to the selected lab.

 

Documenting field outcomes of construction projects, including photo documentation of post-construction observations.

 

 

Performs water resources fieldwork:  Collects, compiles, reviews, and analyze data for surface/ground water quality and quantity, hydrologic, engineering, and other related studies and investigations using appropriate sampling, measurement, and field equipment, methodologies, and techniques.  Operates field, laboratory, and survey equipment for various parameters. Performs field sampling and testing of water, soils, and other materials for water quality and quantity studies, flow investigations, research, and other projects as needed. Maintains an awareness and understanding of the latest state-of-the-art techniques, instrumentation, and technology applicable to the conduct of water resource and engineering studies and data collection/analysis activities.

 

Sets up GPS data bases and features and instructs others in the use of GPS.  Uses GPS to collect and verify field data for inclusion in the GIS.

Education & Experience:

High School Diploma or G.E.D. AND four (4) years of related experience; OR any combination of experience or training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Required:   

  • valid WA State Driver's License and proof of insurance, if requested;
  • successful completion of a general employment verification;
  • experience with Arc/Info and Arc/Edit; and,
  • geographic mapping and cartography, use of GPS receivers, statistical analysis, mathematics related to surveying.
